Writing a book to encourage and inspire people about how to go for their dreams and goals has been a dream of mine for many years! Now that its out and is having such a positive effect on peoples lives --it is a dream come true.

Throughout this process I learned the truth that we're all created "A Cup Short" of greatness. Because in order to author this book and get the word out on The Power of WHO I had to Remember , Reach-Out and Re-Connect with my WHO! I had to seek out and find my real diamonds, those special friends who love me and wanted to help in any way they could just for the sheer Joy of seeing me successfully complete this book! I've learned firsthand---It's all about The Power of WHO!

Defining Self through Self-Reflection & Through Inquiry of Others

One of the top family business consultants (Founder of Dialogue Solutions , Inc.) in the country, and Author of Exit Right, (Mark N. Voeller, Ph.D.) for succession, governance & conflict management just wrote this blog on The Power of WHO.

A 3rd gen family member, with whom I consult, recently expressed his enthusiasm about a book entitled The Power of WHO. At first I was puzzled since the focus appeared to be about using your network of close friends to secure a job. The author’s initial premise (the people who know you and like you are much more likely to help you than some acquaintance separated by more than three-degrees-of-separation) seemed obvious if not simplistic. However, as I read on, it became clear that the author’s premise was much deeper and therefore so meaningful for my client.

Bob Beaudine, the author, drives the reader to consider more carefully:

Our view of ourselves
Our view of our relationships
And our approach to pursuing satisfaction

The book is about building genuine relationships and asking those who are already in our cheering squad for help identifying our strengths and passions. Without resorting to psycho-babble, Beaudine outlines a process for defining self through self-reflection and through inquiry of others.

I simplistically reduce much of what is written about self-esteem to the premise that the more effectively I can identify and accept my own point of view, preferences, emotional responses, and personal strengths / limitations, the greater my comfort with self. The greater my self-acceptance, the greater my sense of self – my self-esteem. Beaudine effectively encourages his readers to accept their own “Who” by being open and fully honest with those “Who” know them best.

He points out that whether we are discussing losing a job or some other awkward moment in our lives, "...you don't feel comfortable talking to your friends and telling anyone about this. So you slide to a bunker alone." Effectively, we cut ourselves off from those who best know us and our potential. The antidote, according to Beaudine, is to turn to those who know us, and who we really are, and to focus on who we ultimately want to be.

Part of his prescription for pursuing who we ultimately want to be involves:

Seeking feedback from those friends who know us so intimately.
It follows that in order to have those 3 close friends, we have to reveal and confide in 3 friends.
The balance of his prescription involves hearing and replacing the negative self-talk that scurries around our brain.
Alternatively Beaudine prescribes the use of a positive thinking process – a conscious effort to reaffirm our goals and the gifts that we uniquely possess which will help us achieve those goals.

If you pick up this little book, I encourage you not to be put off by the first couple of chapters. I must say that I initially found the first couple of chapters a little boring and repetitive. Beaudine’s excessive use of “who” caused me to reflect on the style used so effectively by Dr. Seuss. However, once past that hurdle and upon appreciating the larger message, I believe you will find that the author offers foundational principles that are easily understood. His enthusiasm and warmly presented stories bring these key concepts to life. You and your clients will remember his stories long after the book is returned to the shelf.

There is ONE unseen "Power" that's Kicking our Butts in the area of our Dreams & Goals! It operates below the surface of our conscious awareness but with such profound force that it must be considered one of the Supreme Concealments of all time. What am I talking about??

The “Power of Forgetfulness.”

This Insidious "Power" can secretly overtake our thoughts and emotions like a giant glacier silently advancing through a canyon. The “Power of Forgetfulness” can be all-encompassing as in people with Alzheimer’s disease or other kinds of dementia. Or, it can be as benign as not remembering where you left your keys. In its more subtle and dangerous forms, however, it can undermine your dreams and professional life in often... devastating ways.

I got a call from a friend, who said to me he had been let go from his company after 15 years. He was shocked! I told him; "Congratulations! This is the greatest day of your life!" He said: "What?" I reminded him; "You hated that job! You got divorced in that job! You forgot who you were in that job! Isn't it time to do what you love???

Today, doing what you “love” is one of the most essential components of finding your Dream. One of the great disconnects of life, a truly monumental error that people commonly make, is not allowing love to direct their course. Why? Because they don’t know their own hearts, so they distrust themselves and their natural instincts. When you allow yourself to be so programmed by the culture you’re in that you become disconnected from your own heart, you’re in major trouble. You render yourself unable to make decisions about what's best for your life and the lives of those you love. The real danger here is that you'll begin to follow somebody else’s idea of success and fulfillment. You Forget “Who” and “What” You are. You attempt to become someone or something else for which you're ill suited, and there are Several Possible Reasons for this:

You Want to Be Somebody Else.
A person may admire someone for their achievements in life and want to be like them. But they don’t possess that person’s level of talent, skill, or charisma. Unfortunately, a lot of people live in their own fantasy world, falsely believing they do have what it takes. This is a Big Mistake and a huge time waster.
You Need the Money!
I believe that working to pay the bills is one of the most common causes in Forgetting your dream. So many people are just too tired at the end of the day to work on or even think about their dream. Too bad. Turn off the damn TV! The TV will suck your dream right into the black hole of oblivion. Refuse to veg—unless, of course, your dream is to become a vegetable.
Somebody Else Told You What to Do-
They allowed a parent, teacher, preacher, or some other authority figure to manufacture what they thought was a good identity for them. All of us need wise counselors and good guidance, but only from those who have no other agenda except to help us discover and develop what we love and are well suited for.

Allowing someone else to remake you into their image will rob you of personal satisfaction, peace of mind, and contentment. Don’t allow anyone to derail you from your destiny. Why?

Let me Remind You...You’re a treasure chest filled with amazing talents, gifts, capabilities, dreams, aspirations, originality, passion, power, encouragement, and joy. You've been designed for maximum performance. You can choose to turn off that negative self-talk and choose, instead, to think positive, creative, life-giving thoughts. Or, you can let the tormenting self-talk have its way with you. It’s up to you. You get to choose.

This Event was One of those "Life-Changing Moments"

At the risk of sounding melodramatic, this event was one of those life-changing moment kinds of things. Their office was abuzz with excitement and spilling over with people, mostly in suits, laughing and enjoying wine and hors d’oeuvres delivered by waiters strolling by in penguin suits. It was a much-anticipated shindig that Elizabeth, Emily, KyLea and I were excited about attending, to be sure. The host, Viverae, a corporate wellness programs provider, spared no expense, and the scene was set for a magnificent night.

We mingled ‘til we tingled. Just when I thought the night couldn’t get any better (I’m a sucker for pot stickers and chardonnay), they introduced their guest speaker. It was Bob Beaudine, nationally acclaimed motivational keynote, top executive sports recruiter, and author of “The Power of Who”. Through a series of entertaining stories and morsels of real-life truths, he gave us a taste of the book – and I couldn’t wait to get home with my autographed copy and chew on the meat.

I had to chew slowly. It’s not like Twilight, where you can burn through three chapters during a commercial break. It’s one of those things you have to take in slowly to experience its full power, like a burning red sunset on a secluded beach. But if you do that, the payoff is big.

I’ve gotten so much mileage out of this book that it’s literally transformed my thinking and approach to nearly every relationship in my life. We’re talking paradigm-shifting and all kinds of woah moments. If you don’t believe me, just look at my book – it’s full of ketchup stains from reading it at lunch, water stains from reading in the pool, half a highlighter’s ink worth of goodness called out, and about twenty dog-eared pages. (Bob – can I have a fresh copy?)

Here are just a few of the golden nuggets I culled from his pages (mostly paraphrased, so don’t be underwhelmed. It’s really much, much better):

• Each of us has an assignment, a purpose, and a dream all our own that we need to discover or rediscover. Pursue this dream fearlessly. Go back to childhood or pay attention to where your mind leads you during the day. What are you passionate about that you forgot along the way while trying to survive?

• How do you accomplish this dream? Forget networking – you already know everyone you need to know. Who are these people? They are your friends, and just as you would do anything for them (I literally scaled a wall once to help my friend get some moving boxes from a dumpster!), they will bend over backwards for you.

• When searching for something, your friends are much more likely than strangers to help you out… but you have to ask! Share your vision with your friends. You’ll be amazed at what pops up and who they know. One phone call to a friend, and you’re on your way!

• Expect opposition. Beaudine states, “There are many more paths that lead to failure than there are that lead to success.” It’s a lot easier to go the way most traveled, but not always the best way for you. If inventing the light bulb were an easy task, it would have been done on the ark. But it took persistence by someone with a vision and a dream to make it happen. Sure, Edison encountered opposition from people who told him it couldn’t be done. That’s what makes his invention so much more appreciable.

• Don’t be scared of the unknown. It’s a beautiful open field full of buried gold. Dance around in it in until you find it.

So what’s my dream? It’s still in the making, and I say that because I consider myself one of the fortunate few who is already living it, for the most part. I get to create stuff and dream up ideas and ads and taglines, and as long as I get to be creative I’m happy. But it’s definitely given me a clarity of vision about my goals for the future, and has imparted in me an urgent desire to foster friendships that I candidly have not taken care with. People are the most important and valuable assets any of us have – whether on a personal level or professional. So cultivating these relationships is not something we can afford to push aside.

I think this book will do amazing things for anyone who reads it – especially if you’re willing to do the hard soul-searching stuff. It pays off tremendously.

And next time you’re stuck at a dead end – whether laid off of your job, struggling with physical challenges, or searching to find your purpose on earth – just remember, you’re not alone. You Got Who!

Doing It Your Way--BIG MISTAKE!

We’re going through life with the misconception that our dreams and goals can be accomplished without any help from others. Pity the people who think they don’t need coaches, teachers, mentors, parents, or friends to help and advise them. If you’re among that misguided group, I’ve got a news flash for you: We’re all “A Cup Short!”

The song “My Way,” made popular by Frank Sinatra, glorifies the philosophy of going it alone. But it’s just a song. It’s not real. Actually, Mr. Sinatra didn’t do it his way. Paul Anka wrote the song! There was also an arranger, an orchestra and conductor, a recording studio, a sound engineer, and a record company. It was a collaborative effort. In other words, there were lots of other people involved in helping Ol’ Blue Eyes do it “his way.” Sinatra was a great singer and gifted performer but without the help of others we may never have heard his voice.

The wise person understands that trying to go it alone is a sure way to run into insurmountable obstacles and costly mistakes! You and I need the special relationships we've been given not only to survive but thrive in this impossible world! Remember...You Got WHO! Don't go it alone--Reach Out and Re-Connect today!

You & I Need Our Friends! Lean on Me!

One of the BIG MISTAKES in life today is that most people never reach out for help, never lean on their “Who” in times of need. Not sure if you saw this YouTube w/ Bill Withers & USC Trojan Football Team last week. Love Bill's advice to the team:

"Don't lose sight of the comraderie that you have Now. The later you go in life--the less access you will have to 'this kind' of friendship."

“Sometimes in our lives, we all have pain; we all have sorrow
But if we are wise, we know that there’s always tomorrow
Lean on me when you’re not strong
I’ll be your friend; I’ll help you carry on,
For it won’t be long ’til I’m gonna need somebody to lean on.…”

As I reflected on this song, it occurred to me there have been many times in my life when I needed a friend to lean on. But there were many times when I chose the wrong somebody. Have you ever done that?

Is it pride?
Perhaps you’re afraid that your friends will see you as weak and needy. Big deal—we’re all weak and needy at one time or another!
Perhaps you’re afraid your friends will reject you. But the problem with that kind of thinking is that it’s never true in reverse. You’re a real friend to your friends. If one of your friends came to you for help or advice, wouldn’t your heart be open to them? Of course it would! That’s what friends are for.
Is it that we don’t want to let those closest to us know that we have problems? Hello! We all have problems! You know that, and your friends know it, too.
You might be saying something to yourself like, “I’m not sure I have enough friends in my life who can or will help me.” Sure you do! Trust me, "You Got Who!” You just have to: Remember, Reach Out and Re-Connect.

Friends often come into our lives at just the right moment to help and encourage us to the next level. I don’t think that’s by chance. Every significant change in your life will involve your “Who.” They’re already there. Like the song says…

“For it won’t be long til I’m gonna need somebody to lean on!”

Are you a Yes or No person? Take the test!

Ok, it's a Silly movie-But I liked it! Yes Man with Jim Carrey of course goes over the top on saying "Yes" to everyone. But...we all know "No" people and thats definitely Not working for them or their lives.

What if... we started saying "YES" to those we love? Actually helped them! Call it a test this weekend! You'll be amazed at the results!

Are you a "Yes" person?? Before you answer--ask yourself?
When your mate or close friends call: they're in a crisis-do you respond Yes/No?
How about simple requests-helping clean the kitchen, drop the kids at school, pick up something, give em a backrub, or just take a moment to listen? Yes/No?

Remember... "A True Friend will try to help you Right Now. When you call for help the answer is "YES!" A No Person...we know their response--they merely wish you well."

I finally reached a time in my life when I gave myself permission to stop dreaming and start doing. In the process I learned the truth that we’re all created “A Cup Short” of greatness. Because in order to accomplish the formidable task of authoring this book I had to remember, reach-out, and re-connect with my “Who.”

Lessons from Woodstock 1969

This week’s Blog “Who Are You? Who? Who? Who? Who- had a huge response-Thank You! It was appropriate given that it was on the Anniversary of Woodstock!

The legendary band The Who remains to be one of the main images of WOODSTOCK and what it symbolized with their songs of generational revolution like "My Generation" and "Won't Get Fooled Again." They are now timeless. I still dig them!

But don’t miss the Great Lessons that can be learned from that historical weekend as it relates to your Search For Significance! The Who, Santana, Jefferson Airplane siezed on an opportunity that some totally missed! People miss simple clues that are right next to them! You and I need the ability to detect the clues life sets before us. On this rainy day, these 3 bands and others were asked on short notice to be in a documentary called "Woodstock” and although this decision didn’t seem all that important at the time—it turned out to be the Apex of their careers! Serendipity can appear in unlikely places and come from unexpected sources. Successful people are always expecting serendipity. I love the GK Chesterton quote: “The one thing in life that gives radiance above other things is that there is something great just around the corner.” Are you looking for it?!

On the other hand, many others at Woodstock like The Incredible String Band, refused to go on in the rain and missed the documentary shooting window even though they performed later. They didn't make the legendary film and missed out on the support/screen release that the others benefited from. As the Woodstock legend and movie grew, The Who by their performance and agreement to be in the documentary made them one of the leaders/anthems of change for generations to come. They’re now connected to that event forever and the images from that documentary continues to reach people, while others…unfortunately missed out!

Let’s review 7 Success Tips to assist you in your Search for Significance.

1. When confronted with an opportunity–Ask yourself-- is the Risk Worth the Reward?
2. Life is made up of “Moments and Choices.” Don’t miss yours!
3. Anyone on a great quest is looking for clues that will guide them! You’re closer than you think!
4. Your dream is the fire that energizes you toward your destiny. Don’t allow your own negative thinking to extinguish it!
5. Fear of failure keeps more people stuck in the status quo than anything else!
6. One of life’s great paradoxes is that by not deciding you’re making a decision. Step out!
7. Don’t be a fence sitter. When given an opportunity--Seize it!

Who are you? Who? Who? Who? Who? I really want to know!

Is it possible that U once dreamed of living a different life from the one you're living now but just can't remember, something for which you're uniquely and wonderfully “wired?" Many of us have gotten sidetracked and forgotten our original dream. We’re so busy just dealing with job and life issues that we can forget some of the important things so essential to who we truly are.

If this is you—STOP IMMEDIATELY--call a “Who” Friend! What’s a “Who” friend? How can they help?

1. A “Who” friend will call a halt to fearful thinking by insisting you stop listening to your own negative self-talk. In the face of those lies they will start speaking truth about your accomplishments, and the truth about the value of your dreams and goals.

2. A “Who” friend will intercept you on the dark path you’ve taken and redirect your steps back on to the path of light. They know you, care for you, and will remind you that you have a future and
a hope.

3. A “Who” friend knows your true identity and won’t let you forget it. When the “Power of Forgetfulness” tries to roll in—you need your “Who.”
The world will distract you! If you’re not careful, you will actually forget “Who you are” and end up with a second or third best identity. So:

Who are you? Who? Who? Who? Who?
You really want to know? Well, I believe you’re:

• A person who has a great destiny ahead!
• A Treasure chest of gifts and talents! U do 1 thing better than anyone in the world!
• A “Moment Maker”-An Unconditional Giver!
• A trusted & valued Grandpa/Grandma, Mom/Dad, Husband/Wife, Son or daughter.
• An inspirational mentor-coach-teacher-best friend-mate-counselor,& spiritual adviser.
• A Somebody! Not just Anybody!
• A Great friend! You listen, celebrate, forgive & encourage those around you.
• You’re a Lover! It’s who you are-& that includes loving yourself!

Friendships are as vital to our dreams as food and water are to our bodies. It makes a difference when you show people you care. I know, because it makes a big difference to me when someone cares for me. Dad passed away 9 years ago and Mom followed. Our homes were only 3 blocks apart, and we enjoyed a wonderful, loving relationship. My mom would often call to see how I was doing. I didn’t know how much I enjoyed her checking up on me until there were no more calls.

This weekend I want to encourage you to make the extra effort to celebrate, encourage, and help others. When you step out and do it you will find that it can establish bonds of friendship that will last you a lifetime.
It’s an investment that's never wasted!

Ten fun ideas for this weekend:
1. Invite one of your WHO friends that you haven’t been with in awhile out for coffee or lunch.
2. Invite new and old WHO friends over for a BBQ at your house! Burgers, hotdogs, your favorite special item you grill!!
3. Take a WHO friend to a major league or minor league ball game, buy them a baseball hat, get nachos, and crackerjacks!
4. Get a WHO friend and go workout together or take a class together at a local college.
5. Get another couple and join a Salsa class or go C&W dancing.
6. Get a group together and go bowling!
7. Go play Frisbee Golf! You remember…
8. Be the kind of friend that others can lean on this weekend when they need loyalty, helpful advice, and encouragement. Be that special person who reaches out with an extended hand of friendship when they need it the most! Help that new neighbor move in, carry boxes, or maybe just listen and give encouragement through a loss of a parent, a troubled relationship.
9. Give your time at a local nursing home! Put in flowers in their flowerbeds, read and hug as many there as you can!
10. Be silly: Read the comics, wrestle with your kids, stop at Dunkin Donuts, play in the pool, hit some golf balls, wash your car, get a snow cone, get a library card, and laugh so hard until you cry!

Oh to have a “Who Friend” when life gets all tangled up. Go deep not wide. Be Transformational !!! Life is short, SO HAVE FUN!

Reach Out & Help A Friend Today!

Kevin Spacey starred in a motion picture called Pay It Forward, playing a high school teacher who assigned each student in his class to think of a way to make a significant impact in the lives of others. He challenged them to come up with ideas on how their class could change the world for the better.

One of the students presented a simple, yet profound idea that required everyone in the class to perform three unconditional acts of kindness for a total stranger with the only stipulation being that the recipient would go and do the same thing for three other people. The concept was to “pay it forward,” thereby creating an exponential effect that would change the world for the better.

It’s basically the same concept we have seen or experienced at sporting events called the “wave.” A group of people stand up and throw their arms in the air then sit back down. The “pay it forward” concept kicks in as the next group of people repeats the process. On and on it goes as the “wave” undulates all around the stadium. You can have the same effect on your world as you look for opportunities to be a giver who creates special moments for others. You have the power to start a “wave” that just might go around the world. But remember, you don’t start a “wave” with the person on the other side of the stadium. You start with the person right next to you!

I want to challenge you on two fronts:

1. What if we started this today with the people we know-Our WHO! Each of us knows 1 person who is vulnerable-lost their job or is in a crisis. Remember . . . the times in your life when others were “moment makers” for you. Perhaps it was someone who helped you through a difficult passage in your life or got you that important interview or hired you when no one else would or gave you a great reference— “just because.”

2. Step outside your comfort zone, even when it’s seemingly inconvenient and be a “moment maker." Reach out and help a friend today!

With unemployment rising each month, there are 14.5 million people that are desperately seeking employment. Who are these people? Do we care? Of course we do! They’re our friends, our Dad’s, daughters, uncles, & neighbors. There’s one song they’re singing and we all know the words. What is it? Yeah that’s right--The Beatles, “Help! I need somebody.” But do you remember the next line? “Help not just anybody!” “Who Friends” are not just anybody. They’re your special “somebody.”

There are several reasons you don’t want to go to just “Anybody” to get the help you need:

· Anybody doesn’t really care about your dream, so don’t waste your time asking them for help.

· Anybody isn’t reliable. They usually give advice that’s convenient and helpful for them rather than useful to you.

· Anybody doesn’t know you personally, so they are too busy with their own agenda to stop and help you.

So, don’t ask just “Anybody” for help. The person you want to ask is a “Who” friend. “Who” friends are not just “Anybody,” they’re your special“Somebody.”

· Somebody really does care about you and your dream and has the power and willingness to help you.

· Somebody is reliable. They are willing to take the time and effort to mentor, guide, and assist you in every way they can.

· Somebody knows you personally, likes you, and will make the time to help you.

Each of us knows one person who is vulnerable today! So I want to challenge you on two fronts:

1. Remember . . . the times in your life when others were “moment makers” for you. Perhaps it was someone who helped you through a difficult passage in your life or got you that important interview or hired you when no one else would or gave you a great reference— “just because.”

2. Step outside your comfort zone, even when it’s seemingly inconvenient, to be a “moment maker” for others.

By the way---don’t deprive Your WHO the joy of helping you!

In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy found out that:
“If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again—I won’t look any further than my own backyard. Because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with.”

If your pursuing a worthy goal or trying to make a significant change in your life, don’t go external in your approach, go internal. Most people make the Big Mistake of looking outside their Who Network thinking their success will be found “out there” somewhere. It’s a false notion that your success will come from a bunch of people you don’t know.

**Tip
Look around the landscape of your life. There are valuable treasures there you’ve been overlooking. Too often we allow the temporary to eclipse the eternal. The true and lasting treasures of life are those key relationships that have been given to us as gifts. Sit down and make a list of your 12-3-1. Your 12 friends, your 3 closest and that One Best Friend.

People are too concerned about making mistakes, and this fear of failure causes them to become stuck. In other words, they don’t even try anymore. Remember, “Failure is an event, not a person” As my Plano Texas neighbor Zig Ziglar says. “It’s just an experience where we didn’t like the result.” What I’ve discovered in the executive search business is that failure is overrated. PLANO – Forget traditional networking with near strangers. Executive headhunter Bob Beaudine says you already know everyone you need to know to land your dream job.
Chances are that person is a close friend or family member just waiting to help, says the 53-year-old chief executive of Plano-based Eastman & Beaudine.

Job hunting? Here's the trick: You have to ask

Beaudine's recently published book, The Power of WHO, details how to define who your real allies are and what you really want your next job to be.

"This is common sense parading as wisdom," Beaudine says. "But most people don't think of their friends as conduits and resources to their dreams and goals. That's ridiculous."
Sports Illustrated called Beaudine "the most influential man in sports you have never heard of."
In the last decade, he's placed 33 major college athletic directors, 24 head coaches and a slew of top executives in the professional leagues. The executive vice presidents of sales and marketing at both the Orlando Magic and the Charlotte Bobcats owe their new pro basketball jobs to him.

"His energy is always contagious," says Steve Orsini, who was recruited by Beaudine in 2006 to be athletic director at Southern Methodist University. "When you're working with university committees, many of the members need a little jolt. Bob surely provides that."
There's nothing subdued or downbeat about Bob Beaudine.

Almost every thought is framed as a question, followed by a cheery exclamation. Interviewing him takes stamina, followed by a nap.

Beaudine has been recruiting since opening a Dallas office for his dad's search firm in 1980. He took over as CEO in 1995 and refocused the company on sports and entertainment executives.
He collects friends as business assets.

Orsini and Beaudine have known each other since the mid-1990s, when Orsini was the assistant athletic director at the Naval Academy and Beaudine was scouting for talent.
Orsini's signing with SMU was their first placement together.
Before Orsini even got to campus, he hired Beaudine to find a basketball coach, which he did: Matt Doherty. Two years later, Orsini hired him to find a new football coach, June Jones.
"I'm really proud of the hiring up Bob did for us," Orsini says, "from managing people's expectations to keeping confidentiality to coaching some of my committee members because they weren't optimistic about us getting two former national coaches of the year."

At Baylor University, Beaudine brought in athletic director Ian McCaw, basketball coach Scott Drew and football coach Art Briles. McCaw gave his graduating athletes a copy of The Power of Who! at the year-end banquet. "It was a great way to send them off into the real world. Enough common sense becomes genius. That's really this case."

Beaudine always works on retainer with the organization looking for the management talent and usually gets paid a third of the person's first-year salary. While he has staff in offices around the country, he's the rainmaker, pulling in between $2 million and $4 million in annual revenue for the firm.

5,500 contacts

Beaudine's database contains nearly 5,500 contacts, but only about 100 are his "Who." He begins at this core when doing any type of search, then steadily reduces the circles of influence to find the best person for the task at hand. That's how he landed well-known book agent Jan Miller. He sent an e-mail to 48 friends asking who knew her. In five minutes, he had five positive responses. He chose the one who had lived in the guest house of Miller and her husband, Jeff Rich, while settling into Dallas.

"I met with Jan, and it was a lovefest," recalls Beaudine. "Two hours later, she signs me. Before that, I couldn't even get in to meet with her."

How did he get hockey great Wayne Gretzky, now head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes, to endorse his book? "Wayne is great friends with one of my Whos – a nobody in the world's eyes," Beaudine says. "All of the endorsements are one-offs on purpose."

Voice your dreams

Another key piece of advice: Allow yourself to dream out loud.
In 1993, when a bored Beaudine wanted to quit, his father asked him what he enjoyed most.
"I told him, 'When I do a search for a president of a manufacturing company, I get a tour of the plant. When I do a search for the head of marketing for the NBA, we get the all-star weekend,' " he says. "Dad said, 'Go get that.'

"The amazing aspect is the bridge to those [search] jobs was already there with my corporate clients."

That's how he got his first swing at big league baseball. A corporate client was also part-owner of the Atlanta Braves and head of the search committee for a new baseball commissioner. Beaudine wound up helping the committee interview candidates.
Beaudine still does corporate searches, but mostly for longtime friends.
Beaudine's office on the second floor of the Shops at Legacy resembles Tom Hanks' fantasy flat in the movie Big. Visitors are greeted with a basketball hoop and a huge bowl loaded with 50 pounds of Hot Tamales candy.

Wire bins contain balls autographed by Troy Aikman and Nolan Ryan, along with unknowns who've touched his life. There's an honorary Mustang football jersey with the number 77, the year he graduated from the Hilltop with a degree in marketing.
And an enormous moose head stares into Beaudine's office.

"I grew up with Bullwinkle, and he makes me laugh," Beaudine says, explaining his antique store trophy. "People need to be joyful in their jobs. I am."

Bob Beaudine's reasons dream jobs don't come true:

1. You don't ask.

"There's an epidemic disease: Pride," Beaudine says. "We expect people to come to us like Bob Barker's going to call? He's RETIRED! He's not calling you. I don't care how long you sit or how great your resume is."

2. You ask the wrong people to help.

"If you give me seven references, I guarantee one reference will trash you. Another will throw you under the bus and try to take the job away from you. You need to choose one trusted friend who is a trusted friend of the decision maker."

3. You're Vague.

"You say, 'Gee, I'd like to be a CEO again.' Of what? Or 'I'd like to be in sports. Really?' Want to be a referee? Want to hand out towels at the Mavericks games? How can I help you if you don't tell me what you want? In job search, it's preparation, preparation, preparation."

Say you were in the hospital recovering from minor surgery and wanted to get home. Most likely you'd call family or friends. Now suppose you lost your job. Would you call the same friends? Some folks do, but many opt for faceless sites such as Monster.com or start networking with recruiters and other strangers.

"Take everything you've ever known about networking and throw it out," Bob Beaudine, an entertainment executive recruiter, told IBD. "Talking to people you don't know, handing out business cards like mints -- that doesn't work."

He urges people in need of jobs or anything else to go to their friends.

"You've developed networks of friendships over the years," Beaudine said. "You've got to go back to that. Acquaintances just wish you well. But friends will help you.

Beaudine, who recently wrote "The Power of Who," and Jerry Colangelo, chairman of the Phoenix Suns and the U.S. men's gold medal basketball team, share tips.

** Turn to the familiar. Beaudine says make a list of 12 friends, including three close buddies and one best friend.

It doesn't matter if they don't work in your industry. They care about you and might be able to introduce you to their friends in your business. Each of your 12 pals has 12 friends. Either their friends will hire you, or their friends' friends will.

Colangelo told IBD: "This applies no matter where you are on the totem poll. . . .Whatever your lot in life, there are people around you, whom you may not even recognize as important, who could be helpful, constructive. But you have to take the initial step."

** Don't be vague. "Tell your friends specifically what you want from them. If they don't know what you want, they can't help you," Beaudine said. "Don't be afraid to ask, and don't let pride hold you back."

** Use references. Endorsements help. Suppose you're applying for a job. First, ask your pals if they happen to know the hiring manager. If one does, have him say nice things about you. It'll give you an edge.

When Beaudine was picking agents for his book, he didn't know any. But he'd heard of a great agent named Jan Miller. So he e-mailed friends. Within minutes, five responded that they knew her. One volunteered to arrange a 20-minute meeting. Miller didn't know Beaudine, but she knew that their mutual friend respected him. Two hours later, she signed Beaudine.

** Look for connections. Before interviewing, find out where the hiring manager went to college, what groups he belongs to, what his interests are. Once in the office, look for ski pictures, sports team paraphernalia or photos of children. "Try to connect," Beaudine said. "People hire those they like. If you're interested in the same things, bring it up. But be authentic. All tips around manipulating your way into a job -- it's all crap."

** Give first. If you want your dreams to come true, start by helping others. "The law of reciprocity always works," Beaudine said.

A neighbor, a colleague or a friend is always watching what you're doing. So if you do good, someone will likely help you in return.

In the face of those lies they will start speaking truth, the truth about your value and uniqueness, the truth about your accomplishments, and the truth about the value of your dreams and goals.

· A “Who” friend will intercept you on the dark path you’ve taken and redirect your steps back on to the path of light. They know you, care for you, and will remind you that you have a future and a hope.

· A “Who” friend knows your true identity and won’t let you forget it. When the “Power of Forgetfulness” tries to roll in like a blob—you need your “Who.”
One of the greatest mistakes in business today is that most people never reach out for help, never lean on their “Who” in times of need. Big Mistake!

As a result of the economic crisis, the number of unemployed persons increased from 851,000 to 12.5 million in February. Therefore, the introduction of The Power of Who: You Already Know Everyone You Need to Know by Bob Beaudine (Center Street, Hachette Book Group) could not have hit bookstores at a more appropriate time. Published in January, Beaudine delivers an inspirational, common sense approach to landing your dream job. The writing is straightforward and conversational with plenty of anecdotes, case studies and quotes. So start investing some time in your “Who,” reconnect with your “Who,” build your “Who,” nurture your “Who,” because in the end … it’s all about the “Who!” Take, for example, Denny Crane and Alan Shore on the popular TV series “Boston Legal.” Denny, played by William Shatner, and Alan, played by James Spader, have a precious relationship—almost a romance. They are best friends who cannot fathom living life without the other. Their friendship represents the relationship you should have with your “Who.” The second part of the Beaudine plan is to declare what competent and talented individuals are working too hard in unsatisfying careers because they dropped out of the process of discovering what they want to do and whom they want to do it with. And don’t forget to ask for help. You might be a genius in some area of your life, he says, but you’re going to need your “Who” to assist you where you’re not strong. Even Frank Sinatra needed help. The song “My Way,” made popular by Ol’ Blue Eyes, glorifies the philosophy of going it alone. But, in fact, Sinatra didn’t do it his way. Paul Anka wrote that song. There was also an arranger, an orchestra, a recording studio, a sound engineer and a record company. It was a collaborative effort. In the words of Beaudine, “If you’re lost in a jungle trying to do it your way … STOP!”

Networking. We hear this term so often, but rarely take the time to think what is behind it. Is it shameless self-promotion by shoving your business card into every empty hand you see, or is it something more nuanced such as a business lunch, golf outing, or happy hour?

Finding people who share those values may be to go no further than speaking with your best friend. In The Power of WHO , sports and entertainment recruiter Bob Beaudine rejects traditional notions of gaining access to heavy hitters in you industry. “Everything we know about networking is crap,” Beaudine plainly states.

Beaudine’s idea of networking is very simple: “You already know everyone you need to know.”
“Who do you think is more likely to help you find a job?” poses Beaudine. “Someone who doesn’t know you—or someone who is a personal friend that knows your talent, energy, drive, and ambition first-hand?” It sounds rather self-explanatory, since when people are laid-off, the first people they are likely to tell are their friends and family and ask them for help.
Does this mean that Beaudine is endorsing nepotism?

Well, no, not exactly. In The Power of Who, Beaudine believes that people who know you have a better chance of helping you move toward your dreams because they already know you and like you. Plus they have some insight as to how they understand your needs, and can attest to the quality of your character. It pays dividends to maintain good relationships with these people because someone they know could be the contact that helps you find a job, an expert, or even a mate.

Before you can have your personal network help you, you must clearly define what it is exactly that you want. “Every day in my recruiting practice, people call me to talk about finding their dream job. Unfortunately, what I hear way too often are vague generalities such as, “I’ve always wanted to be in sports,” exclaims Beaudine. “My first thought is—“What job? Which sport?”
“We’ve been taught just to get a job, although I think the opposite that you should do what you love,” Beaudine exclaims so you can hear the smile in his voice. “We have recurring dreams that come back to us over and over again. If you’re looking for a job, you should go for your dream. When destiny calls you must answer.”

Beaudine continues, “The Power of WHO is becoming a moment maker for others. Every person from the preceding generation can look out and remember the day when someone gave them a reference or an introduction when they didn’t deserve it. Today, you can help others reach their goals and dreams. To paraphrase Zig Ziglar, “if you want your dream to come true, you’ve got to help other people achieve their dreams.”

My name is D Diana and I am a sales & marketing executive in the large 401K and Pension Plan industry. In April of 2008 I was laid off from a company I had spent 8 years at. It took me by suprise but I quickly got on my feet connected with a few of my contacts in the industry and landed a job at another firm in September of 2008. It was not my dream job and quite frankly at a much lower level and lower pay scale than I was used to. I think I took the job just for the security of it and to have a job. From the moment I started I knew it was a mistake and things just went sideways from there. My management team was let go in early December and I was laid off in mid-february of 2009. Wow twice in a year. I was not sure how to handle that and what my next possible step would be. My husband came home one day and told me that he heard this guy on the radio that just wrote a book called the Power of WHO. He explained at a high level that this book basically talks about how you need to surround yourself with people you like and like you. It sounded interesting so I thought about it for another month or so and then went and picked up the book at Barnes & Noble. By the way they only had 1 copy in the entire store and it was not east to find.
I started reading the book and slowly but surely finished it. I purposely wanted to take my time reading because I wanted to absorb all of it. I loved it and out of all of the books that I have read ( and you name it I have read all the "business books" you can imagine) this had so many applications. Way beyond my expectations and clearly concepts that I will use in my everyday life.
I have already started to put into practice the Power of WHO. I am excited now what my future holds. I am not sure that I know exactly what my dream job is right now but I am fairly sure that this journey is going to take me there. I met with my old boss last week and gave him the book and am waiting to hear his thoughts on it. He is in my Power of WHO and has already connected me with a few others that I will be talking to.
There are a few reasons that I am writing this email.
1. I am writing this is because I want to Thank You for writing such a great book and with the amount of social networking being done on the intranet this book is so relevant to the technology that we have available to us today.
2. To find out if you have created a blog for readers where they can share their successes and pitfalls as they utilize their Power of WHO concepts.
3. To let you know that I have gone to Barnes & Noble & Borders in Manchester CT and they no longer have the book on the shelf. I will now order on the internet but sometimes there is nothing greater than the instant gratification of buying a book at the store that someone recommented.
4. I see that You do speaking events. I have many contacts in my industry that are always looking for relevant speakers for conferences. Are you part of one of the speaking bureas? The financial services industry is going through all kinds of margin compression and if there is a time that advisors need to be effecient with their business development efforts it is now. Just some thoughts on an industry that You could make a real impact on.
Certainly if I land my self back in the industry and I need a speaker Bob Beaudine would be the first I call.

"Take everything you have ever heard or learned aboutnetworking and just throw it out. That's right. Throw it out. Because...Networking as we know it - IS CRAP! .It doesn't work!"So said Bob Beaudine, CEO of Eastman & Beaudine, at a recent PowerLunch message hosted by Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, TX. As Bob and I had lunch, along with several hundred others, he presented a contrarian view of networking for job, business and career opportunities. As his website states with millions seeking a job who do you think is more likely to help you? A website, someone who doesn't know you or that personal friend that knows your talent, energy, drive and ambition first-hand. Bob cited his own networking business efforts where he collected over 5,000 contacts, but only 87 provided the most significant business and success. I was intrigued by his point of view and will have to read the book. As one seeking the best next opportunity [have suitcase, will travel for a freelance training gig], I asked my Plano, TX library system to get the the book. Got to use my tax dollars wisely. Bob offered other views worth remembering from his executive recruiting experience in sports and entertainment. Hiring authorities have four questions in mind about candidates:

Do I know you?

Do I like you?

Do you understand my needs?

Are you the best for me in my particular situation?

When the decision maker can say 'yes' about you to these questions, then you are the one. Skills, experience, education wouldn't matter much when you realize "I can't deny the fact that you like me! You like me!" What a great feeling to be wanted because they like you as a person. Instead of an employee who we think can do this job which we are going to pay our money. And you may not even like us. Last PointBob asked the audience a question to help understand the power of WHO!, to identify your dream in life and how to get it.

With unemployment being at its highest since 1992 and millions in fear of losing their jobs, I’ve reached out to Bob Beaudine, author of "THE POWER OF WHO" to be my guest blogger today.
His message – one that cannot be understated: People Hire People–Not Resumes.
In this Bullish On Books guest post, Bob offers advice on what to do and what not to do in this down market to find a job.
In a very challenging and uncertain marketplace, who do you think is more likely to help you find a job--a career website, someone who doesn’t know you, or someone who is a personal friend that knows your talent, energy, drive, and ambition first-hand? You already know the answer! With unemployment at almost 8%, and 11.6 million people desperately seeking work; faceless websites, business cards passed out to near strangers and mass emails sent out to Dear Sir, To Whom It May Concern, and Dear Recruiter are all considered spam! I know, because after 25-plus years as a top executive recruiter, I’ve been on the receiving end of way too much of it.
Let me give you some insight that I recently share in my book The Power of WHO as to what executive recruiters and prospective bosses are thinking about when they interview you. Knowing this is like getting the test answers before the test. It should change the way you market yourself.
Here are the 4 questions going through their mind as they meet you:
Do I know you?
Do I like you?
Do you understand my needs?
Are you the best for me and my particular situation?
Since all the candidates being considered will have great qualifications for the role- the first question is the key!
Do I know you? What they’re thinking is how do I know this person? Who recommended them? Why? Because references, endorsements, testimonials are your biggest allies to win the job. Over 80% of jobs placed are through a friend or a friend of a friend. So a strategy of finding one friend who is friends with the decision maker and would give you a positive reference before your meeting is gold!
You Already Have a Powerful Network
Is it possible that someone you already know, someone who likes you, can actually help you find your next job? Yes, Absolutely! One of the greatest mistakes in business today is that most people never reach out for help, never lean on their "Who" (friends) in times of need. These friends undergird you with a power you don’t have on your own. They’ll ask their “Who” to help you get where you want to go. They’ll open doors that you couldn’t open alone and get you connected. All you have to do to get started is to implement the 3 R’s- Remember, Reach Out and Re-Connect!
Remember- Your best asset in times of crisis is the relationships you already have. Can you name them? The reason so many people are confused about who their true friends are is simply because they’ve never declared it. So make a list of your 12 friends, 3 close and 1 best friend. These 12 are your “inner circle” of greatest influence. Next, make a list of your old friends you knew at school, church, teams, neighbors, clubs, charities etc. Finding new friends is always good, but keeping the ones you have is more important.
Reach Out- Call these friends! Tell them you miss them! These are people who would drop everything to help you. Don’t worry if it’s been 20 years since you talked--one of life’s pleasant little phenomena is that once someone holds a place in your heart, they never leave. Expect to hear: “Where have you been—I missed you!”
Re-Connect- Almost everyone would agree that we all need friends. But what good is having friends if you hardly ever talk to them? We need to start doing life once again with friends-investing time with them, reconnecting, nurturing and building these relationships because in the end—it’s all about “Who!” How many people do you really need to know this year to find that job you desperately need? Probably just one.

When you consider that each of the people in your circle of friends has great influence with their circle of friends, you can begin to grasp the true power of “Who!” To find your job and achieve your dreams, learn to appreciate your friends, ask them for help, and give them help in return. You’ll be amazed at the results, but more importantly, you’ll grow closer to the people who should matter the most – your friends.

I was recommended a book to read over the Christmas Holiday call “The Power Of Who” by Bob Beaudine. I was one of the first people to receive the book and have read it three times now. I think this is the best book I have ever read on networking. Very powerful ideas anyone can use and should use everyday. I would highly recommend it to anyone, not just in business, but in life. I have ordered 12 books to give to my closest friends and customers. I just handed out my last one, now I have to order another 12. I wanted to thank Bob personally for taking the time to write this book. I called his office and talked with Katy. She was gracious to give Bob my message because he was on a conference call. She said he would call at some point. Well a few days later, meaning today, my cell phone rang and it was Bob on the other end. I was so thrilled and shocked, I almost drove off of the road. Thank you Bob for taking time out of your busy day to give me a call. It was great talking to you, I really appreciate it. Keep up the great work. Thank you.

Leaders Create 'A Special Moment'
As George W. Bush is completing his first week in the ultra-exclusive club of being a former President of the United States, I'll share with you a passage that I have just come across in a newly published book I'm reading. It resonates under the circumstances of the change in the White House. It also contains a leadership lesson for all. The book is "The Power of Who," by Bob Beaudine, president and CEO of Eastman & Beaudine, an executive search firm. Bob rewinds in time with this following anecdote:
"I met George W. in 1983 while planning a political event for his dad (then vice president) and President Ronald Reagan. We couldn't get either of the two fathers to come speak at our event, so we did the next best thing—we invited their kids: George W. and Maureen Reagan.
"When my wife, Cheryl, and I picked up George W. at Love Field in Dallas, I expected to see Secret Service and an entourage of helper bees swarming the vice president's son. But to my surprise, there was no one with him. The future president of the United States came off that Southwest Airlines flight from Midland, Texas, wearing the basic uniform of a Texas oilman: a blue work shirt and jeans. He even carried a backpack.
"George W. was down to earth and charismatic and had an engaging smile. It wasn't long before he made Cheryl and me feel like we were his closest friends, partly by his endearing style of calling me Bobby instead of Bob. Nobody had called me a nickname since college. Through the years, this term of affection went from Bobby to Bobby Boy.
"We hosted George throughout the event. Watching him, my wife and I both commented that he seemed naturally gifted with the skills needed for this type of political fund-raising event. He made friends easily and seemed like he cared about those he met. He also had one exceptional skill that cannot be learned. When he first meets you, he has the rare ability to create a special moment just between the two of you. He would put a hand on your shoulder or tell a story or a joke as if it were meant just for you.
"Had I been more perceptive perhaps I would have recognized some of the clues that indicated greater things to come in George W.'s future."
A poignant reflection, indeed. And, no matter what your political persuasion, a singular insight into the character of leadership. By the way, Bob Beaudin's book is subtitled "You Already Know Everyone You Need to Know." To be honest, that intriguing subtitle is what got me to crack the cover. It's a worthy read, particularly for the times we're in now when relationships—and leadership at every level—are being tested by the economic crisis.

Instead, Bob recommends three Rs:Remember. You're not alone in your situation. Get back to your WHO--those people you knew in your first jobs, in college, at church, in your kids' sports teams. We've got to talk to the people who matter most because friends help us, not acquaintances.Reach out. You've got to call them and say, "Where have you been? I've missed you?" These people would drop everything to help. But we think because we haven't talked to them in a while that they're going to think we're a user. That's just not true! Ask for their help. Don't be vague about what you're doing; tell them what you need and that you'll help them whenever you can.Reconnect with Key People. How many people do you really need this year to get that one big deal? Probably just one. But we don't usually have a list in front of us of the people that matter. We live the rest of our lives with lists. When it comes down to talking about people that matter to you, put them on a list.Then, when you're finally sitting across from someone who wants to hire you, promote you or give you new business,

Beaudine says you should remember the four questions they're thinking about as they interview you:

Do I know you? They're wondering if they've heard about you or if someone has spoken to them on your behalf. Recommendations are the biggest reason someone gets a job or makes a sale. In fact, 87 percent of jobs are placed from one friendly reference!
Do I like you? How long is it before you form an opinion of someone? It's in the first few minutes. Can you create a positive personal relationship if you've never met a person and no one has given you a reference? Not in two minutes.
Do you understand my needs? Are you speaking just about yourself, or have you researched my company, my current situation and have unique solutions just for me?
Are you the best for my situation? Do you have the skills-set I need right now?

As Beaudine reminds us, friendships are as vital to our dreams and goals as food and water are to our bodies. True friendships are based on loyalty and mutual regard. There are no strings attached. You help your WHO friends simply because you can.

Pity the person who thinks they don't need coaches, teachers, mentors, parents, or friends to help advise them.

The fact is: You and I need the special relationships we've been given not only to get that unique job we’re seeking but also to thrive in this impossible world. Don't attempt to live life on your own. Get off the "Lone Ranger" treadmill. Running harder and faster all alone is clearly not a good strategy.
What if each of us had been given key relationships in our lives that have been specifically placed there to help us in ways we never imagined? And what if those special people were not just happenstance acquaintances but were, instead, strategic relationships meant to be actively involved in helping us find that place in life we always dreamed about? Could it be that we've missed the simplicity behind this mysterious thing called destiny? What if the real problem of finding your dream or achieving that goal isn't about who you don't know, but whom you've neglected?
One of the greatest mistakes in business today is that most people never reach out for help, never lean on their "Who" in times of need. “Who” friends undergird you with a power you don't have on your own. They'll ask their "Who" to help you get where you want to go. They'll open doors for you that you couldn't open alone and get you connected—that’s the strength you gain with The Power of WHO!

When I mention the names Plaxico Burress or Michael Vick what comes to your mind? How about when I say: Rod Blagojevich, Eliot Spitzer, or Bernard Madoff. These are smart and talented people—but what were they thinking…? We’ve all seen the mistakes of many high-profile people that result in embarrassment and public humiliation.
I have come to believe one of the very best strategies you can implement to achieve maximum protection is to create your own “Personal Board of Directors.” It has been very revealing to me over my 20 plus years as an executive recruiter that in interview after interview the significant and differentiating factor of one candidate over the other was the-- quality of their “personal board” (or lack of them). These important advisers are the ones who helped design, guide, and encourage the successful candidates to believe in themselves, press the outer limits, shoot for the stars, and discover their dreams. But they also held them accountable to be transparent in business and above reproach in their personal lives.

"THIS CAN BE SO LIFE CHANGING YOU SHOULD READ IT TWICE!"
All across the nation, we have heard cries for "Change!" Leadership change, economic change, social change, you name it–we want to change it! But interestingly, the process and strategy we are currently using to find jobs -- needs changing! We need to take everything we have ever heard or learned about "Networking" and just throw it out. That is right. Throw it out…as in jettison, dump, expel, and cast out, in other words… Fuh-ged-aboud-it! I can make such a radical statement because, based on my 20 plus years in the executive recruiting business as the CEO of Eastman and Beaudine.

I can unequivocally tell you that: "Networking" as we know it is crap! It does not work!

This year do something better for yourself:

· Forget traditional networking
· Friends get you jobs you want
· Go where your celebrated not just tolerated
· Find jobs that ignite your passion
· What you love is a major clue

Doing what you Love is one of the most essential components of finding your dream. One of the great disconnects of life, a truly monumental error people commonly make is not allowing love to direct their course. You may be surprised to discover you already know someone who can open a door for you -- someone who likes you enough to act as a bridge for you.

Remember, Reach-out and Re-Connect.

Use the authentic circle of people that care about you -they will truly want to help you. This is your "Power of WHO”. And with CHANGE, comes HOPE.

Context Matters: Yes, I Know You and Yes, I Can Help You!

One of my “Who” friends sent me a great article from the Washington Post by Gene Weingarten (check out Gene on Wikipedia here) titled "Pearls Before Breakfast." Joshua Bell, a one-time child prodigy violinist who now plays around the country in standing room only crowds held a unique experiment. The test of whether, in an incongruous context, ordinary people would stop and listen to a one of the great musicians of the world if he was disguised as just a street musician? The answer was…they didn't! Talent wasn't enough! Context matters! In fact- he was given tips of $32 dollars and change for 43 minutes of magnificent playing. 7 people stopped to listen and 1070 hurried by…How did they miss this amazing talent? What were they thinking? Recently Joshua Bell was awarded the "Avery Fisher Prize" for top classical musician in America.

This article poses a similar question I challenge people to think about in my new book The Power of WHO. Adversity seems to be woven into the very fabric of life. It seems to come out of nowhere and, of course, at the worst possible time. The important question is if the bottom dropped out for you, who would you turn to for help? People you know or don't know? It's authentic friends that know you and have shared meaningful experiences with you that you can count on to help in every way possible. On the street, people couldn't even stay in the moment long enough to hear some of the best music ever played. They didn't know him and as a result they tuned Joshua out.

Unfortunately, 10.3 million people are desperately looking for work and unfortunately are turning to "traditional networking" -using Cold calls, sending out mass email blasts; Dear Sir, To Whom It May Concern, and Dear Recruiter. They are also passing out business cards to strangers and mindlessly trying to multiply their social network with mere acquaintances. Do you think ordinary people, recruiters, or executives will stop and read these emails and consider their talent? The answer is…No! Absolutely not! Why? Because they do not know you! Context matters...so does your Power of Who. And in these challenging times it may be of great value to remind a friend that needs some inspiration too.

It’s Not “What” but “Who” That Will Change Your Life This Year!

Welcome to Your “Who” Blog! I hope this becomes a regular thing for you and me and we become trusted friends! I will give you exclusive insight from my experience as CEO of one of the major executive recruiting firms in the country Eastman and Beaudine. I will offer practical solutions on what every job hunter; college graduate and businessperson needs to know about developing deep connections with the friends in your life who actually want to help you succeed. Here is a thought to consider for the New Year.

* The “What” in life – what you want and what you have done – will take you only so far. Eventually you will come to a chasm you cannot cross without someone’s help.

* People are “bridges” you must cross to get where you want to go – that is the “Who” I am talking about. Understand that your “What” will never come into play until your “Who” brings you across. So ask yourself, should you spend all your precious time studying, researching and meditating on the “What” without having a plan for the “Who?” No! Go deep with your friendships this year – not wide! Your “Who” are the people that truly know and care about you, far more authentic than the masses of names that people attain passing out business cards to strangers and through online social links. Be transformational – not transactional.
