The Power of Who - Response to a Fan!

By Bob Beaudine CEO and Owner of Eastman-Beaudine and Author of The Power of Who
Many have been asking me for stories of how The Power of WHO has changed lives. The stories I get are truly amazing, just look at the story below. If you have WHO stories please share them with me so that I can share these with others. Who knows it may end up on my blog or we may run into each other someday soon.

My name is D Diana and I am a sales & marketing executive in the large 401K and Pension Plan industry. In April of 2008 I was laid off from a company I had spent 8 years at. It took me by suprise but I quickly got on my feet connected with a few of my contacts in the industry and landed a job at another firm in September of 2008. It was not my dream job and quite frankly at a much lower level and lower pay scale than I was used to. I think I took the job just for the security of it and to have a job. From the moment I started I knew it was a mistake and things just went sideways from there. My management team was let go in early December and I was laid off in mid-february of 2009. Wow twice in a year. I was not sure how to handle that and what my next possible step would be. My husband came home one day and told me that he heard this guy on the radio that just wrote a book called the Power of WHO. He explained at a high level that this book basically talks about how you need to surround yourself with people you like and like you. It sounded interesting so I thought about it for another month or so and then went and picked up the book at Barnes & Noble. By the way they only had 1 copy in the entire store and it was not east to find.
I started reading the book and slowly but surely finished it. I purposely wanted to take my time reading because I wanted to absorb all of it. I loved it and out of all of the books that I have read ( and you name it I have read all the "business books" you can imagine) this had so many applications. Way beyond my expectations and clearly concepts that I will use in my everyday life.
I have already started to put into practice the Power of WHO. I am excited now what my future holds. I am not sure that I know exactly what my dream job is right now but I am fairly sure that this journey is going to take me there. I met with my old boss last week and gave him the book and am waiting to hear his thoughts on it. He is in my Power of WHO and has already connected me with a few others that I will be talking to.
There are a few reasons that I am writing this email.
1. I am writing this is because I want to Thank You for writing such a great book and with the amount of social networking being done on the intranet this book is so relevant to the technology that we have available to us today.
2. To find out if you have created a blog for readers where they can share their successes and pitfalls as they utilize their Power of WHO concepts.
3. To let you know that I have gone to Barnes & Noble & Borders in Manchester CT and they no longer have the book on the shelf. I will now order on the internet but sometimes there is nothing greater than the instant gratification of buying a book at the store that someone recommented.
4. I see that You do speaking events. I have many contacts in my industry that are always looking for relevant speakers for conferences. Are you part of one of the speaking bureas? The financial services industry is going through all kinds of margin compression and if there is a time that advisors need to be effecient with their business development efforts it is now. Just some thoughts on an industry that You could make a real impact on.
Certainly if I land my self back in the industry and I need a speaker Bob Beaudine would be the first I call.
Thanks for listening and I will keep you updated on my Power of Who progress. Sincerely, D Diana.

Hi D Diana,
What a great note! Thank You! The message of The Power of WHO is starting to get out there-(but it takes amazing people like u to assist) It is changing lives! I have been getting some amazing emails and endorsements all over the Globe! Some people want to write their endorsements on Amazon or Borders or Barnes and Noble sites! Great things ahead! The key is your 12-3-1!

Find them Declare Friendship Invest in them Then ASK!

STOP Networking and Remember, Reach-Out and Re-connect

"Take everything you have ever heard or learned aboutnetworking and just throw it out. That's right. Throw it out. Because...Networking as we know it - IS CRAP! .It doesn't work!"So said Bob Beaudine, CEO of Eastman & Beaudine, at a recent PowerLunch message hosted by Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, TX. As Bob and I had lunch, along with several hundred others, he presented a contrarian view of networking for job, business and career opportunities. As his website states with millions seeking a job who do you think is more likely to help you? A website, someone who doesn't know you or that personal friend that knows your talent, energy, drive and ambition first-hand. Bob cited his own networking business efforts where he collected over 5,000 contacts, but only 87 provided the most significant business and success. I was intrigued by his point of view and will have to read the book. As one seeking the best next opportunity [have suitcase, will travel for a freelance training gig], I asked my Plano, TX library system to get the the book. Got to use my tax dollars wisely. Bob offered other views worth remembering from his executive recruiting experience in sports and entertainment. Hiring authorities have four questions in mind about candidates:

Do I know you?

Do I like you?

Do you understand my needs?

Are you the best for me in my particular situation?

When the decision maker can say 'yes' about you to these questions, then you are the one. Skills, experience, education wouldn't matter much when you realize "I can't deny the fact that you like me! You like me!" What a great feeling to be wanted because they like you as a person. Instead of an employee who we think can do this job which we are going to pay our money. And you may not even like us. Last PointBob asked the audience a question to help understand the power of WHO!, to identify your dream in life and how to get it.

Who was your moment maker?

I am still thinking about it. Time you should as well. Thanks for the message, Bob.

Sheri Sharman went from being a broke single mom who taught pre-school to becoming one of the most successful women in Network Marketing history. As a pre-school teacher, Sheri quickly learned that she had a passion for teaching and helping others. She incorporated this passion into her Network Marketing career and has since coached tens-of-thousands of people on personal development, image, building confidence, finding joy, earning more money, and creating one's desired lifestyle. Sheri has been a top income earner in every company she has participated in. She has broken numerous sales records for both personal and team production, and she earned multi-millionaire status early in her career. In 2009, she will celebrate twenty two years of success as a network marketing professional. She is an expert at building sales teams.

The Power of “Who”.There is a book with that exact title, The Power of WHO written by Bob Beaudine. In this book Mr. Beaudine talks about the importance of friendships and how vital they are to our dreams and success. I totally agree with him that true friendships are based on love, loyalty and mutual respect with no strings attached. I thought it was very interesting that if you have 100 friends and I have 100 friends…most would think that between the two of us we would have 200 friends. But that is the wrong answer, it would be 10,000! It’s exponential. In this book he explains how each of the people in our circle of friends has great influence with their circle of friends. He explains that our friends are pre-wired with a strong desire to help us.For those of you that have attended any of our current trainings with MVP University or any that Buck Reed and I have taught throughout the years you will feel like you are hearing something very familiar. We have referred to it as “digging” and working with your warm market. In today’s economy it is so important to reconnect to people and to reach out to others by using today’s online tools to speed up your relationship building.I myself have become more familiar with LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter as well as blogging just to name a few ways to stay connected and to build on your relationships and establish new ones with social networks.

To Your Success,
Sheri Sharman

Featured on the Today Show, The Power of WHO is a LIFE CHANGING Resource!

After 25 years as one on the world's leading executive recruiters in sports and entertainment, Bob Beaudine, CEO of Eastman & Beaudine offers practical and proven advice, through a common sense approach to attaining your Goals and Dreams.

Bob Beaudine believes Networking is Not working for Americans any longer. This highly respected and well-connected head hunter shares his philosophy on what really works in identifying what your dream in life is and how to get it. With his unique 100/40 principle, Beaudine takes the traditional networking concept, shakes it up and rebuilds it, explaining that individuals already know everyone they need to know. He shows readers that they have established a powerful network simply by interacting with people in their daily lives. Beaudine explains this new way to achieve dreams clearly, in a step-by step fashion using his well-tested knowledge to break it down and help readers tap into the Power of Who.

Testimonials:“Bob Beaudine had me hooked by chapter two! He articulates what we instinctively know: people matter most. God teaches this. Our heart teaches this. But we forget. You are holding a timely reminder. I’m going to read it again.”- Max Lucado, New York Times bestselling author of inspirational Christian books“Bob Beaudine challenges you to think differently. His unique approach to life and business has helped elevate many careers.”- Roger Goodell, Commissioner of the NFL

“The Power of WHO provides great lessons about how to succeed in business and in life. If you surround yourself with quality people and great friends, the sky’s the limit.”- Wayne Gretzky, Owner, Managing Partner and Head Coach, Phoenix Coyotes“The Power of WHO is the biggest, simplest idea that has ever hit the scene for effectively building, growing and sustaining relationships!”- Todd Duncan, New York Times bestselling author-motivational speaker-sales trainer

Bob Beaudine speaks out on:
On setting the right priorities in the first place:

"Many of us are working way too hard in jobs we don’t like while pursuing relationships that are actually bad for us and in some cases even living in places we don’t enjoy. If you allow yourself to be fooled into pursuing just position, power, and money, you will miss out on the true treasures of peace, happiness, and a deep-down contentment."
On changing the trajectory of our lives:

"One of the big lies many of us tell ourselves is that our current position in life disqualifies us from achieving our dreams and goals. Some of the common phrases I’ve heard are “It’s too late for me. I’m too old,” or “I’m too young,” or “I’m too…whatever.” Is that true? No! It’s absolutely not true. You’re never too early or late in life to begin walking on the pathway of your dream. One thing is absolutely certain: the future is on the way. Ready or not, here it comes."
On investing in your "Who":

"Do you know your ‘Who?' I've developed a database of over 5,365 people that can say "Hi, Bob." That really doesn’t mean a lot except that I know a lot of people because of my business. I had what I thought was a great networking strategy, but I discovered I was dead wrong. One day I stopped and studied who had actually given me business or touched my life in some significant way over the last ten years. I was shocked to learn that there were only 87! Eighty-seven out of 5,365! I enjoy meeting people, but I should have been spending more time investing in the 87 who were actually impacting my life in significant ways."

On getting what we really want:

"Most people never get what they want for three simple reasons. They don’t ask. No one can help if they don’t know what you want. When they do ask, they ask the wrong people. For some reason, people are uncomfortable asking their m>'Who' for help. As a result, they’ll ask most anyone except their friends, who are the only ones with a motive to help. When they do ask for help, they ask too vaguely. Even if I’m motivated to help a friend, I can’t do it when I don’t know what he or she wants."

The Power of Who in Cox Today Magazine

SPRING 2009--COX TODAY MAGAZINE Alumni Profile Bob Beaudine

SMU Cox Alumnus and Executive Recruiter Transforms the Job Search with “The Power of WHO”In today’s troubled economy, many job seekers are getting creative in their job search. But according to Robert E. “Bob” Beaudine (BBA ’77), you already know everyone you need to know, and with that, you can build a professional community that will alter the trajectory of your life. Beaudine, CEO of Eastman & Beaudine, is one of the world’s leading executive recruiters in sports, entertainment and business, and has been called “The most influential man in sports you have never heard of” by Sports Illustrated. He maintains close ties with SMU and the Cox School of Business. In fact, Beaudine is responsible for the recent hire of football coach June Jones, Steve Orsini, SMU’s director of athletics and Matt Doherty, men’s basketball coach. He is also a long-time member of the Cox Associate Board. His new book, “The Power of WHO” was released in January and turns conventional wisdom about networking on its head, based on two decades of experience in the industry. Beaudine offers job seekers – those in search of a new career, a better job and a richer life – irresistibly practical solutions that work in good times and bad. The “WHO” Beaudine frequently refers to is your circle of friends, family and supporters. “It’s a call to you that says, ‘There’s a different world. We’ve been lied to, we’ve been misled, and we need to draw a line in the sand. Here’s the dream job from now on. This is what you should do,’” he said. Beaudine says position, power and money are the wrong motivators for happiness and contentment. Instead, do a job you love with people you love in a place you love. He tells job seekers the first step towards finding that dream job is to “get out of the box and into the circle of WHO.” “Networking is disingenuous and implies something that it’s not. It implies friendship when it means mere acquaintances,” he said. “So I really tell people that they’ve got to take everything that they’ve ever heard about networking and throw it out.” “The first and foremost step is to realize that you’re not alone. You have a community of friends we have each developed individually over many years through love and unconditional giving who want to help you. Don’t base a job search around acquaintances. Make a list of your “Inner Circle 12-3-1” – 12 friends, 3 close friends and 1 best friend. Once you have come up with your 12-3-1 list, list your top 1-100 friends. These are people who came in or out of your life for a variety of reasons –high school or college, church, clubs, your first job, through your mom or your extended family. It can be your pharmacist, your coaches, your teachers and your mentors. The next step is to develop a list of your dreams, goals and aspirations. This is the second piece of what Beaudine calls the “100/40 Strategy.” It is the “Top 40 List” of what you want to do and accomplish in life. Then, tap into your “WHO” list of 100 and your inner circle to help make personal connections within your “Top 40 List” that will help you get in the door.” One great resource Cox students and alumni can take advantage of is the Associate Board executive mentor program. This is one of the most differentiating factors of the Cox School, said Beaudine, who has been involved with the Board for many years. This program allows students to capitalize on the school’s close ties with some of Dallas’ leading companies and most influential business leaders. “We have amazing people on this board. These are the sharpest, brightest minds I consider to be in America,” said Beaudine. These people have contacts that can introduce them to any category in any area, just like any executive recruiter. These people have WHO!” Beaudine offers the following tips to job seekers:-Remember your friends and family (your “WHO”) and nurture those relationships.

-Stop the traditional way of doing things: cold calls, blind e-mails, letters to “Dear Sir or Madame.”

-Know you are not alone. Don’t be afraid to ask your WHO for help.

-Make a 12-3-1 list and develop your 100/40 strategy.

-Find what you are amazing at doing. If you don’t know, ask your friends.

-Don’t be vague. Develop a clear and specific game plan of where you would liketo work, and with whom.

-Reconnect with old friends and acquaintances. The Cox Alumni Association, Linked In and Facebook are great places to start.
