Doing It Your Way--BIG MISTAKE!



We’re going through life with the misconception that our dreams and goals can be accomplished without any help from others. Pity the people who think they don’t need coaches, teachers, mentors, parents, or friends to help and advise them. If you’re among that misguided group, I’ve got a news flash for you: We’re all “A Cup Short!”

The song “My Way,” made popular by Frank Sinatra, glorifies the philosophy of going it alone. But it’s just a song. It’s not real. Actually, Mr. Sinatra didn’t do it his way. Paul Anka wrote the song! There was also an arranger, an orchestra and conductor, a recording studio, a sound engineer, and a record company. It was a collaborative effort. In other words, there were lots of other people involved in helping Ol’ Blue Eyes do it “his way.” Sinatra was a great singer and gifted performer but without the help of others we may never have heard his voice.

The wise person understands that trying to go it alone is a sure way to run into insurmountable obstacles and costly mistakes! You and I need the special relationships we've been given not only to survive but thrive in this impossible world! Remember...You Got WHO! Don't go it alone--Reach Out and Re-Connect today!

Unexpected Change Can Be Overwhelming. Avoid the Bunker!

Where do they turn? They go to the dreaded…“Bunker.”

When a crisis comes, people do the craziest things. They go bonkers and begin to bunker. “Bunkering” is when you try to sneak away and hide while hoping everything will just work out. You fool yourself into believing you can manage your crisis alone. You internalize everything and shut out everyone around you. Big Mistake! That’s doing exactly the opposite of what you need most. What you really need is someone who will confidentially listen, care, and help strategize with you! You need your “Who”! Those people who care about you and want to help . . . “just because.” You need true friends who know you and can remind you how successful you’ve been and how your next success is “just around the corner.”

As we get ready for the new week, stop for a moment and remember your friends, family, neighbors, and people at church who you know are hiding in the dreaded Bunker!

What can we do? We can be a “Who” friend!

What’s a “Who” friend?
· A “Who” friend will call a halt to fearful thinking by insisting you stop listening to your own negative self-talk. In the face of those lies they will start speaking truth, the truth about your value and uniqueness, the truth about your accomplishments, and the truth about the value of your dreams and goals.

· A “Who” friend will intercept you on the dark path you’ve taken and redirect your steps back on to the path of light. They know you, care for you, and will remind you that you have a future and a hope.

· A “Who” friend knows your true identity and won’t let you forget it. When the “Power of Forgetfulness” tries to roll in like a blob—you need your “Who.”
One of the greatest mistakes in business today is that most people never reach out for help, never lean on their “Who” in times of need. Big Mistake!

Networking. We hear this term so often, but rarely take the time to think what is behind it. Is it shameless self-promotion by shoving your business card into every empty hand you see, or is it something more nuanced such as a business lunch, golf outing, or happy hour?


Finding people who share those values may be to go no further than speaking with your best friend. In The Power of WHO, sports and entertainment recruiter Bob Beaudine rejects traditional notions of gaining access to heavy hitters in you industry. “Everything we know about networking is crap,” Beaudine plainly states.


Beaudine’s idea of networking is very simple: “You already know everyone you need to know.”
“Who do you think is more likely to help you find a job?” poses Beaudine. “Someone who doesn’t know you—or someone who is a personal friend that knows your talent, energy, drive, and ambition first-hand?” It sounds rather self-explanatory, since when people are laid-off, the first people they are likely to tell are their friends and family and ask them for help.
Does this mean that Beaudine is endorsing nepotism?


Well, no, not exactly. In The Power of Who, Beaudine believes that people who know you have a better chance of helping you move toward your dreams because they already know you and like you. Plus they have some insight as to how they understand your needs, and can attest to the quality of your character. It pays dividends to maintain good relationships with these people because someone they know could be the contact that helps you find a job, an expert, or even a mate.


Before you can have your personal network help you, you must clearly define what it is exactly that you want. “Every day in my recruiting practice, people call me to talk about finding their dream job. Unfortunately, what I hear way too often are vague generalities such as, “I’ve always wanted to be in sports,” exclaims Beaudine. “My first thought is—“What job? Which sport?”
“We’ve been taught just to get a job, although I think the opposite that you should do what you love,” Beaudine exclaims so you can hear the smile in his voice. “We have recurring dreams that come back to us over and over again. If you’re looking for a job, you should go for your dream. When destiny calls you must answer.”


Beaudine continues, “The Power of WHO is becoming a moment maker for others. Every person from the preceding generation can look out and remember the day when someone gave them a reference or an introduction when they didn’t deserve it. Today, you can help others reach their goals and dreams. To paraphrase Zig Ziglar, “if you want your dream to come true, you’ve got to help other people achieve their dreams.”

My name is D Diana and I am a sales & marketing executive in the large 401K and Pension Plan industry. In April of 2008 I was laid off from a company I had spent 8 years at. It took me by suprise but I quickly got on my feet connected with a few of my contacts in the industry and landed a job at another firm in September of 2008. It was not my dream job and quite frankly at a much lower level and lower pay scale than I was used to. I think I took the job just for the security of it and to have a job. From the moment I started I knew it was a mistake and things just went sideways from there. My management team was let go in early December and I was laid off in mid-february of 2009. Wow twice in a year. I was not sure how to handle that and what my next possible step would be. My husband came home one day and told me that he heard this guy on the radio that just wrote a book called the Power of WHO. He explained at a high level that this book basically talks about how you need to surround yourself with people you like and like you. It sounded interesting so I thought about it for another month or so and then went and picked up the book at Barnes & Noble. By the way they only had 1 copy in the entire store and it was not east to find.
I started reading the book and slowly but surely finished it. I purposely wanted to take my time reading because I wanted to absorb all of it. I loved it and out of all of the books that I have read ( and you name it I have read all the "business books" you can imagine) this had so many applications. Way beyond my expectations and clearly concepts that I will use in my everyday life.
I have already started to put into practice the Power of WHO. I am excited now what my future holds. I am not sure that I know exactly what my dream job is right now but I am fairly sure that this journey is going to take me there. I met with my old boss last week and gave him the book and am waiting to hear his thoughts on it. He is in my Power of WHO and has already connected me with a few others that I will be talking to.
There are a few reasons that I am writing this email.
1. I am writing this is because I want to Thank You for writing such a great book and with the amount of social networking being done on the intranet this book is so relevant to the technology that we have available to us today.
2. To find out if you have created a blog for readers where they can share their successes and pitfalls as they utilize their Power of WHO concepts.
3. To let you know that I have gone to Barnes & Noble & Borders in Manchester CT and they no longer have the book on the shelf. I will now order on the internet but sometimes there is nothing greater than the instant gratification of buying a book at the store that someone recommented.
4. I see that You do speaking events. I have many contacts in my industry that are always looking for relevant speakers for conferences. Are you part of one of the speaking bureas? The financial services industry is going through all kinds of margin compression and if there is a time that advisors need to be effecient with their business development efforts it is now. Just some thoughts on an industry that You could make a real impact on.
Certainly if I land my self back in the industry and I need a speaker Bob Beaudine would be the first I call.

This is the second piece of what Beaudine calls the “100/40 Strategy.” It is the “Top 40 List” of what you want to do and accomplish in life. Then, tap into your “WHO” list of 100 and your inner circle to help make personal connections within your “Top 40 List” that will help you get in the door.” One great resource Cox students and alumni can take advantage of is the Associate Board executive mentor program. -Stop the traditional way of doing things: cold calls, blind e-mails, letters to “Dear Sir or Madame.”

-Know you are not alone. Don’t be afraid to ask your WHO for help.

-Make a 12-3-1 list and develop your 100/40 strategy.

-Find what you are amazing at doing. If you don’t know, ask your friends.

-Don’t be vague. Develop a clear and specific game plan of where you would liketo work, and with whom.

You’ve Got Who! Perhaps you’ve gotten the phone call yourself recently. Someone you know has lost his or her job and is calling to ask if you know of anyone who’s hiring or if they can use you as a reference. With the current state of the economy and the massive layoffs that have resulted, that type of scenario has become all too commonplace. According to Bob Beaudine’s new book, “The Power of WHO,” the first place to start with a job hunt of any other of your life’s goals is with those people you know the best.Beaudine owns one of the nation’s preeminent executive search firms specializing in the sports and entertainment industries, Eastman & Beaudine, and served as a presenter at TEAMS 2007 in Louisville. As an executive recruiter, he hears from thousands of people every year who are unhappy in their jobs or are looking for work. In “The Power of WHO,” Beaudine says that too often people focus on the “what” (what they want) at the expense of the “who” (the friends or friends of friends who can help them accomplish their goals). Beaudine suggests that the first step for anyone looking to change careers or pursue other major goals should be t make a list not of everyone you know but a dozen of your best friends. From that list, select your three closest friends and your one best friend. These 12 make up your inner circle. But having an inner circle and constructing a list of your 12 closest friends will itself not lead to your dream job or the attainment of your goals if those people are not aware of what it is you’re pursing.
Beaudine writes that most people never get what they want for three reasons:
1. They don’t ask. No one can help if they don’t know what you want.
2. When they do ask, they ask the wrong people. For some reason, people are uncomfortable asking their “who” for help. As a result, they’ll ask almost anyone except their friends, who are the only ones with a motive to help.
3. When they do ask for help, they ask too vaguely. Even if I’m motivated to help a friend, I can’t do it when I don’t know what he or she wants.
In “The Power of WHO,” Beaudine also suggests the use of what he calls the “100-40 Strategy” In this case, you should make a longer list of your friends (100 maximum) and a list of 40 things you want to accomplish (or if you’re hunting for a job, 40 places you would love to work). As Beaudine notes, the exact numbers are less important than the concept of putting your goals in writing so that your wider circle of friends can help you attain them. With each of your 100 friends becoming your proponent in their own circle of friends, you will now have the potential to connect with up to 10,000 people who can help you achieve your dreams.Beaudine also points out the importance of reaching out and reconnecting with your “community of friends.” But he is quick to note that for “The Power of WHO” to work, you must offer assistance at least as often as you ask for it. The Power of Who
With unemployment being at its highest since 1992 and millions in fear of losing their jobs, I’ve reached out to Bob Beaudine, author of "THE POWER OF WHO" to be my guest blogger today.
His message – one that cannot be understated: People Hire People–Not Resumes.
In this Bullish On Books guest post, Bob offers advice on what to do and what not to do in this down market to find a job.
In a very challenging and uncertain marketplace, who do you think is more likely to help you find a job--a career website, someone who doesn’t know you, or someone who is a personal friend that knows your talent, energy, drive, and ambition first-hand? You already know the answer! With unemployment at almost 8%, and 11.6 million people desperately seeking work; faceless websites, business cards passed out to near strangers and mass emails sent out to Dear Sir, To Whom It May Concern, and Dear Recruiter are all considered spam! I know, because after 25-plus years as a top executive recruiter, I’ve been on the receiving end of way too much of it.
Let me give you some insight that I recently share in my book The Power of WHO as to what executive recruiters and prospective bosses are thinking about when they interview you. Knowing this is like getting the test answers before the test. It should change the way you market yourself.
Here are the 4 questions going through their mind as they meet you:
Do I know you?
Do I like you?
Do you understand my needs?
Are you the best for me and my particular situation?
Since all the candidates being considered will have great qualifications for the role- the first question is the key!
Do I know you? What they’re thinking is how do I know this person? Who recommended them? Why? Because references, endorsements, testimonials are your biggest allies to win the job. Over 80% of jobs placed are through a friend or a friend of a friend. So a strategy of finding one friend who is friends with the decision maker and would give you a positive reference before your meeting is gold!
You Already Have a Powerful Network
Is it possible that someone you already know, someone who likes you, can actually help you find your next job? Yes, Absolutely! One of the greatest mistakes in business today is that most people never reach out for help, never lean on their "Who" (friends) in times of need. These friends undergird you with a power you don’t have on your own. They’ll ask their “Who” to help you get where you want to go. They’ll open doors that you couldn’t open alone and get you connected. All you have to do to get started is to implement the 3 R’s- Remember, Reach Out and Re-Connect!
Remember- Your best asset in times of crisis is the relationships you already have. Can you name them? The reason so many people are confused about who their true friends are is simply because they’ve never declared it. So make a list of your 12 friends, 3 close and 1 best friend. These 12 are your “inner circle” of greatest influence. Next, make a list of your old friends you knew at school, church, teams, neighbors, clubs, charities etc. Finding new friends is always good, but keeping the ones you have is more important.
Reach Out- Call these friends! Tell them you miss them! These are people who would drop everything to help you. Don’t worry if it’s been 20 years since you talked--one of life’s pleasant little phenomena is that once someone holds a place in your heart, they never leave. Expect to hear: “Where have you been—I missed you!”
Re-Connect- Almost everyone would agree that we all need friends. But what good is having friends if you hardly ever talk to them? We need to start doing life once again with friends-investing time with them, reconnecting, nurturing and building these relationships because in the end—it’s all about “Who!” How many people do you really need to know this year to find that job you desperately need? Probably just one.
Most people never get what they want for three simple reasons:
They don’t ask. No one can help you if they don’t know what you want.
When they do ask, they ask the wrong people. For some reason, people are uncomfortable asking their “Who” for help. As a result, they’ll ask most anyone except their friends, who are the only ones with a motive to help.
You’re vague. Even if I’m motivated to help a friend, I can’t do it when I don’t know what he or she wants. As Jerry McGuire would say: “Help Me—Help You!”
You Already Know Everyone You Need To Know
When you consider that each of the people in your circle of friends has great influence with their circle of friends, you can begin to grasp the true power of “Who!” To find your job and achieve your dreams, learn to appreciate your friends, ask them for help, and give them help in return. You’ll be amazed at the results, but more importantly, you’ll grow closer to the people who should matter the most – your friends.

It always confused me that people use a non-relational approach to get something so important they're going to work eight to ten to twelve hours a day for."Nameless strangers won't help, but our WHO will. They are friends and allies willing to help when we reach out.Says Beaudine, "Your WHO is your community of friends that's been built up over many years with love and unconditional giving.

These friends care about you, they want to help you, they share your core values. They'll come to your aid if you'd ask them. We've been taught incorrectly that friends and business are taboo. So who are we supposed to work with? People we don't know and don't trust?"There's a good chance you know someone right now who has lost their job or is in a vulnerable position at work. "They feel like they've been in a car wreck," relates Beaudine. "There's pain, fear, panic. But who do you call if you've been in a wreck? You don't pull out a business card from your last conference. You call a family member or a friend."He adds that people who've lost jobs or those in trouble financially tend to go to Monster.com, send out mass e-mails or start cold-calling businesses. Instead, Bob recommends three Rs:Remember. You're not alone in your situation. Get back to your WHO--those people you knew in your first jobs, in college, at church, in your kids' sports teams. We've got to talk to the people who matter most because friends help us, not acquaintances.Reach out. You've got to call them and say, "Where have you been? I've missed you?" These people would drop everything to help. But we think because we haven't talked to them in a while that they're going to think we're a user. That's just not true! Ask for their help. Don't be vague about what you're doing; tell them what you need and that you'll help them whenever you can.Reconnect with Key People. How many people do you really need this year to get that one big deal? Probably just one. But we don't usually have a list in front of us of the people that matter. We live the rest of our lives with lists. When it comes down to talking about people that matter to you, put them on a list.Then, when you're finally sitting across from someone who wants to hire you, promote you or give you new business,

Beaudine says you should remember the four questions they're thinking about as they interview you:

  1. Do I know you? They're wondering if they've heard about you or if someone has spoken to them on your behalf. Recommendations are the biggest reason someone gets a job or makes a sale. In fact, 87 percent of jobs are placed from one friendly reference!
  2. Do I like you? How long is it before you form an opinion of someone? It's in the first few minutes. Can you create a positive personal relationship if you've never met a person and no one has given you a reference? Not in two minutes.
  3. Do you understand my needs? Are you speaking just about yourself, or have you researched my company, my current situation and have unique solutions just for me?
  4. Are you the best for my situation? Do you have the skills-set I need right now?

As Beaudine reminds us, friendships are as vital to our dreams and goals as food and water are to our bodies. True friendships are based on loyalty and mutual regard. There are no strings attached. You help your WHO friends simply because you can.

What’s Holding You Back? You Already Know Everyone You Need to Know!

"Fear Factor in the Workplace." The New York Times editors recently stated this when they reported that the economy lost 524,000 jobs in December, raising unemployment to 7.2 percent. Now more than 10 million Americans are unemployed. These anxieties are transforming the workplace. We need a new plan because it's way too depressing and frustrating to have dreams, goals, and a vision for where you want to go but no way to get there--or even an inkling of how to get started.
One of the most important "Job Advice Tip's" you need to know Right NOW is that "You Already Know Everyone You Need To Know" to get that job you desperately need. Before you balk at the simplicity of that statement, let it sink in a bit. I'm telling you it’s true! Most of us haven't taken advantage of all that's available. We're going through life with the misconception that our Job Search can be accomplished without any help from others. Pity the person who thinks they don't need coaches, teachers, mentors, parents, or friends to help advise them.

  • The fact is: You and I need the special relationships we've been given not only to get that unique job we’re seeking but also to thrive in this impossible world. Don't attempt to live life on your own. Get off the "Lone Ranger" treadmill. Running harder and faster all alone is clearly not a good strategy.
  • What if each of us had been given key relationships in our lives that have been specifically placed there to help us in ways we never imagined? And what if those special people were not just happenstance acquaintances but were, instead, strategic relationships meant to be actively involved in helping us find that place in life we always dreamed about? Could it be that we've missed the simplicity behind this mysterious thing called destiny? What if the real problem of finding your dream or achieving that goal isn't about who you don't know, but whom you've neglected?

When I mention the names Plaxico Burress or Michael Vick what comes to your mind? How about when I say: Rod Blagojevich, Eliot Spitzer, or Bernard Madoff. These are smart and talented people—but what were they thinking…? We’ve all seen the mistakes of many high-profile people that result in embarrassment and public humiliation.
I have come to believe one of the very best strategies you can implement to achieve maximum protection is to create your own “Personal Board of Directors.” It has been very revealing to me over my 20 plus years as an executive recruiter that in interview after interview the significant and differentiating factor of one candidate over the other was the-- quality of their “personal board” (or lack of them). These important advisers are the ones who helped design, guide, and encourage the successful candidates to believe in themselves, press the outer limits, shoot for the stars, and discover their dreams. But they also held them accountable to be transparent in business and above reproach in their personal lives.

Context Matters: Yes, I Know You and Yes, I Can Help You!

One of my “Who” friends sent me a great article from the Washington Post by Gene Weingarten (check out Gene on Wikipedia here) titled "Pearls Before Breakfast." Joshua Bell, a one-time child prodigy violinist who now plays around the country in standing room only crowds held a unique experiment. The test of whether, in an incongruous context, ordinary people would stop and listen to a one of the great musicians of the world if he was disguised as just a street musician? The answer was…they didn't! Talent wasn't enough! Context matters! In fact- he was given tips of $32 dollars and change for 43 minutes of magnificent playing. 7 people stopped to listen and 1070 hurried by…How did they miss this amazing talent? What were they thinking? Recently Joshua Bell was awarded the "Avery Fisher Prize" for top classical musician in America.
This article poses a similar question I challenge people to think about in my new book The Power of WHO. Adversity seems to be woven into the very fabric of life. It seems to come out of nowhere and, of course, at the worst possible time. The important question is if the bottom dropped out for you, who would you turn to for help? People you know or don't know? It's authentic friends that know you and have shared meaningful experiences with you that you can count on to help in every way possible. On the street, people couldn't even stay in the moment long enough to hear some of the best music ever played. They didn't know him and as a result they tuned Joshua out.
Unfortunately, 10.3 million people are desperately looking for work and unfortunately are turning to "traditional networking" -using Cold calls, sending out mass email blasts; Dear Sir, To Whom It May Concern, and Dear Recruiter. They are also passing out business cards to strangers and mindlessly trying to multiply their social network with mere acquaintances. Do you think ordinary people, recruiters, or executives will stop and read these emails and consider their talent? The answer is…No! Absolutely not! Why? Because they do not know you! Context matters...so does your Power of Who. And in these challenging times it may be of great value to remind a friend that needs some inspiration too.
