Doing It Your Way--BIG MISTAKE!



We’re going through life with the misconception that our dreams and goals can be accomplished without any help from others. Pity the people who think they don’t need coaches, teachers, mentors, parents, or friends to help and advise them. If you’re among that misguided group, I’ve got a news flash for you: We’re all “A Cup Short!”

The song “My Way,” made popular by Frank Sinatra, glorifies the philosophy of going it alone. But it’s just a song. It’s not real. Actually, Mr. Sinatra didn’t do it his way. Paul Anka wrote the song! There was also an arranger, an orchestra and conductor, a recording studio, a sound engineer, and a record company. It was a collaborative effort. In other words, there were lots of other people involved in helping Ol’ Blue Eyes do it “his way.” Sinatra was a great singer and gifted performer but without the help of others we may never have heard his voice.

The wise person understands that trying to go it alone is a sure way to run into insurmountable obstacles and costly mistakes! You and I need the special relationships we've been given not only to survive but thrive in this impossible world! Remember...You Got WHO! Don't go it alone--Reach Out and Re-Connect today!

The treasure you seek might be right there in your own backyard

In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy found out that:
“If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again—I won’t look any further than my own backyard. Because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with.”


If your pursuing a worthy goal or trying to make a significant change in your life, don’t go external in your approach, go internal. Most people make the Big Mistake of looking outside their Who Network thinking their success will be found “out there” somewhere. It’s a false notion that your success will come from a bunch of people you don’t know.

**Tip
Look around the landscape of your life. There are valuable treasures there you’ve been overlooking. Too often we allow the temporary to eclipse the eternal. The true and lasting treasures of life are those key relationships that have been given to us as gifts. Sit down and make a list of your 12-3-1. Your 12 friends, your 3 closest and that One Best Friend.

PLANO – Forget traditional networking with near strangers. Executive headhunter Bob Beaudine says you already know everyone you need to know to land your dream job.
Chances are that person is a close friend or family member just waiting to help, says the 53-year-old chief executive of Plano-based Eastman & Beaudine.

Job hunting? Here's the trick: You have to ask

Beaudine's recently published book, The Power of WHO, details how to define who your real allies are and what you really want your next job to be.

"This is common sense parading as wisdom," Beaudine says. "But most people don't think of their friends as conduits and resources to their dreams and goals. That's ridiculous."
Sports Illustrated called Beaudine "the most influential man in sports you have never heard of."
In the last decade, he's placed 33 major college athletic directors, 24 head coaches and a slew of top executives in the professional leagues. The executive vice presidents of sales and marketing at both the Orlando Magic and the Charlotte Bobcats owe their new pro basketball jobs to him.

"His energy is always contagious," says Steve Orsini, who was recruited by Beaudine in 2006 to be athletic director at Southern Methodist University. "When you're working with university committees, many of the members need a little jolt. Bob surely provides that."
There's nothing subdued or downbeat about Bob Beaudine.

Almost every thought is framed as a question, followed by a cheery exclamation. Interviewing him takes stamina, followed by a nap.

Beaudine has been recruiting since opening a Dallas office for his dad's search firm in 1980. He took over as CEO in 1995 and refocused the company on sports and entertainment executives.
He collects friends as business assets.

Orsini and Beaudine have known each other since the mid-1990s, when Orsini was the assistant athletic director at the Naval Academy and Beaudine was scouting for talent.
Orsini's signing with SMU was their first placement together.
Before Orsini even got to campus, he hired Beaudine to find a basketball coach, which he did: Matt Doherty. Two years later, Orsini hired him to find a new football coach, June Jones.
"I'm really proud of the hiring up Bob did for us," Orsini says, "from managing people's expectations to keeping confidentiality to coaching some of my committee members because they weren't optimistic about us getting two former national coaches of the year."

At Baylor University, Beaudine brought in athletic director Ian McCaw, basketball coach Scott Drew and football coach Art Briles. McCaw gave his graduating athletes a copy of The Power of Who! at the year-end banquet. "It was a great way to send them off into the real world. Enough common sense becomes genius. That's really this case."

Beaudine always works on retainer with the organization looking for the management talent and usually gets paid a third of the person's first-year salary. While he has staff in offices around the country, he's the rainmaker, pulling in between $2 million and $4 million in annual revenue for the firm.

5,500 contacts

Beaudine's database contains nearly 5,500 contacts, but only about 100 are his "Who." He begins at this core when doing any type of search, then steadily reduces the circles of influence to find the best person for the task at hand. That's how he landed well-known book agent Jan Miller. He sent an e-mail to 48 friends asking who knew her. In five minutes, he had five positive responses. He chose the one who had lived in the guest house of Miller and her husband, Jeff Rich, while settling into Dallas.

"I met with Jan, and it was a lovefest," recalls Beaudine. "Two hours later, she signs me. Before that, I couldn't even get in to meet with her."

How did he get hockey great Wayne Gretzky, now head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes, to endorse his book? "Wayne is great friends with one of my Whos – a nobody in the world's eyes," Beaudine says. "All of the endorsements are one-offs on purpose."

Voice your dreams

Another key piece of advice: Allow yourself to dream out loud.
In 1993, when a bored Beaudine wanted to quit, his father asked him what he enjoyed most.
"I told him, 'When I do a search for a president of a manufacturing company, I get a tour of the plant. When I do a search for the head of marketing for the NBA, we get the all-star weekend,' " he says. "Dad said, 'Go get that.'

"The amazing aspect is the bridge to those [search] jobs was already there with my corporate clients."

That's how he got his first swing at big league baseball. A corporate client was also part-owner of the Atlanta Braves and head of the search committee for a new baseball commissioner. Beaudine wound up helping the committee interview candidates.
Beaudine still does corporate searches, but mostly for longtime friends.
Beaudine's office on the second floor of the Shops at Legacy resembles Tom Hanks' fantasy flat in the movie Big. Visitors are greeted with a basketball hoop and a huge bowl loaded with 50 pounds of Hot Tamales candy.

Wire bins contain balls autographed by Troy Aikman and Nolan Ryan, along with unknowns who've touched his life. There's an honorary Mustang football jersey with the number 77, the year he graduated from the Hilltop with a degree in marketing.
And an enormous moose head stares into Beaudine's office.

"I grew up with Bullwinkle, and he makes me laugh," Beaudine says, explaining his antique store trophy. "People need to be joyful in their jobs. I am."

Bob Beaudine's reasons dream jobs don't come true:

1. You don't ask.

"There's an epidemic disease: Pride," Beaudine says. "We expect people to come to us like Bob Barker's going to call? He's RETIRED! He's not calling you. I don't care how long you sit or how great your resume is."

2. You ask the wrong people to help.

"If you give me seven references, I guarantee one reference will trash you. Another will throw you under the bus and try to take the job away from you. You need to choose one trusted friend who is a trusted friend of the decision maker."

3. You're Vague.

"You say, 'Gee, I'd like to be a CEO again.' Of what? Or 'I'd like to be in sports. Really?' Want to be a referee? Want to hand out towels at the Mavericks games? How can I help you if you don't tell me what you want? In job search, it's preparation, preparation, preparation."

Say you were in the hospital recovering from minor surgery and wanted to get home. Most likely you'd call family or friends. Now suppose you lost your job. Would you call the same friends? Some folks do, but many opt for faceless sites such as Monster.com or start networking with recruiters and other strangers.

"Take everything you've ever known about networking and throw it out," Bob Beaudine, an entertainment executive recruiter, told IBD. "Talking to people you don't know, handing out business cards like mints -- that doesn't work."

He urges people in need of jobs or anything else to go to their friends.

"You've developed networks of friendships over the years," Beaudine said. "You've got to go back to that. Acquaintances just wish you well. But friends will help you.

Beaudine, who recently wrote "The Power of Who," and Jerry Colangelo, chairman of the Phoenix Suns and the U.S. men's gold medal basketball team, share tips.

** Turn to the familiar. Beaudine says make a list of 12 friends, including three close buddies and one best friend.

It doesn't matter if they don't work in your industry. They care about you and might be able to introduce you to their friends in your business. Each of your 12 pals has 12 friends. Either their friends will hire you, or their friends' friends will.

Colangelo told IBD: "This applies no matter where you are on the totem poll. . . .Whatever your lot in life, there are people around you, whom you may not even recognize as important, who could be helpful, constructive. But you have to take the initial step."

** Don't be vague. "Tell your friends specifically what you want from them. If they don't know what you want, they can't help you," Beaudine said. "Don't be afraid to ask, and don't let pride hold you back."

** Use references. Endorsements help. Suppose you're applying for a job. First, ask your pals if they happen to know the hiring manager. If one does, have him say nice things about you. It'll give you an edge.

When Beaudine was picking agents for his book, he didn't know any. But he'd heard of a great agent named Jan Miller. So he e-mailed friends. Within minutes, five responded that they knew her. One volunteered to arrange a 20-minute meeting. Miller didn't know Beaudine, but she knew that their mutual friend respected him. Two hours later, she signed Beaudine.

** Look for connections. Before interviewing, find out where the hiring manager went to college, what groups he belongs to, what his interests are. Once in the office, look for ski pictures, sports team paraphernalia or photos of children. "Try to connect," Beaudine said. "People hire those they like. If you're interested in the same things, bring it up. But be authentic. All tips around manipulating your way into a job -- it's all crap."

** Give first. If you want your dreams to come true, start by helping others. "The law of reciprocity always works," Beaudine said.

A neighbor, a colleague or a friend is always watching what you're doing. So if you do good, someone will likely help you in return.

What can we do? We can be a “Who” friend!

What’s a “Who” friend?
· A “Who” friend will call a halt to fearful thinking by insisting you stop listening to your own negative self-talk. In the face of those lies they will start speaking truth, the truth about your value and uniqueness, the truth about your accomplishments, and the truth about the value of your dreams and goals.

· A “Who” friend will intercept you on the dark path you’ve taken and redirect your steps back on to the path of light. They know you, care for you, and will remind you that you have a future and a hope.

· A “Who” friend knows your true identity and won’t let you forget it. When the “Power of Forgetfulness” tries to roll in like a blob—you need your “Who.”
One of the greatest mistakes in business today is that most people never reach out for help, never lean on their “Who” in times of need. Big Mistake!

As a result of the economic crisis, the number of unemployed persons increased from 851,000 to 12.5 million in February. They are best friends who cannot fathom living life without the other. Their friendship represents the relationship you should have with your “Who.” The second part of the Beaudine plan is to declare what competent and talented individuals are working too hard in unsatisfying careers because they dropped out of the process of discovering what they want to do and whom they want to do it with. And don’t forget to ask for help. You might be a genius in some area of your life, he says, but you’re going to need your “Who” to assist you where you’re not strong. Even Frank Sinatra needed help. Networking. We hear this term so often, but rarely take the time to think what is behind it. Is it shameless self-promotion by shoving your business card into every empty hand you see, or is it something more nuanced such as a business lunch, golf outing, or happy hour?


Finding people who share those values may be to go no further than speaking with your best friend. In The Power of WHO, sports and entertainment recruiter Bob Beaudine rejects traditional notions of gaining access to heavy hitters in you industry. “Everything we know about networking is crap,” Beaudine plainly states.


Beaudine’s idea of networking is very simple: “You already know everyone you need to know.”
“Who do you think is more likely to help you find a job?” poses Beaudine. “Someone who doesn’t know you—or someone who is a personal friend that knows your talent, energy, drive, and ambition first-hand?” It sounds rather self-explanatory, since when people are laid-off, the first people they are likely to tell are their friends and family and ask them for help.
Does this mean that Beaudine is endorsing nepotism?


Well, no, not exactly. In The Power of Who, Beaudine believes that people who know you have a better chance of helping you move toward your dreams because they already know you and like you. Plus they have some insight as to how they understand your needs, and can attest to the quality of your character. It pays dividends to maintain good relationships with these people because someone they know could be the contact that helps you find a job, an expert, or even a mate.


Before you can have your personal network help you, you must clearly define what it is exactly that you want. “Every day in my recruiting practice, people call me to talk about finding their dream job. Unfortunately, what I hear way too often are vague generalities such as, “I’ve always wanted to be in sports,” exclaims Beaudine. “My first thought is—“What job? Which sport?”
“We’ve been taught just to get a job, although I think the opposite that you should do what you love,” Beaudine exclaims so you can hear the smile in his voice. “We have recurring dreams that come back to us over and over again. If you’re looking for a job, you should go for your dream. When destiny calls you must answer.”


Beaudine continues, “The Power of WHO is becoming a moment maker for others. Every person from the preceding generation can look out and remember the day when someone gave them a reference or an introduction when they didn’t deserve it. Today, you can help others reach their goals and dreams. To paraphrase Zig Ziglar, “if you want your dream to come true, you’ve got to help other people achieve their dreams.”

My name is D Diana and I am a sales & marketing executive in the large 401K and Pension Plan industry. In April of 2008 I was laid off from a company I had spent 8 years at. It took me by suprise but I quickly got on my feet connected with a few of my contacts in the industry and landed a job at another firm in September of 2008. It was not my dream job and quite frankly at a much lower level and lower pay scale than I was used to. I think I took the job just for the security of it and to have a job. From the moment I started I knew it was a mistake and things just went sideways from there. My management team was let go in early December and I was laid off in mid-february of 2009. Wow twice in a year. I was not sure how to handle that and what my next possible step would be. My husband came home one day and told me that he heard this guy on the radio that just wrote a book called the Power of WHO. He explained at a high level that this book basically talks about how you need to surround yourself with people you like and like you. It sounded interesting so I thought about it for another month or so and then went and picked up the book at Barnes & Noble. By the way they only had 1 copy in the entire store and it was not east to find.
I started reading the book and slowly but surely finished it. I purposely wanted to take my time reading because I wanted to absorb all of it. I loved it and out of all of the books that I have read ( and you name it I have read all the "business books" you can imagine) this had so many applications. Way beyond my expectations and clearly concepts that I will use in my everyday life.
I have already started to put into practice the Power of WHO. I am excited now what my future holds. I am not sure that I know exactly what my dream job is right now but I am fairly sure that this journey is going to take me there. I met with my old boss last week and gave him the book and am waiting to hear his thoughts on it. He is in my Power of WHO and has already connected me with a few others that I will be talking to.
There are a few reasons that I am writing this email.
1. I am writing this is because I want to Thank You for writing such a great book and with the amount of social networking being done on the intranet this book is so relevant to the technology that we have available to us today.
2. To find out if you have created a blog for readers where they can share their successes and pitfalls as they utilize their Power of WHO concepts.
3. To let you know that I have gone to Barnes & Noble & Borders in Manchester CT and they no longer have the book on the shelf. I will now order on the internet but sometimes there is nothing greater than the instant gratification of buying a book at the store that someone recommented.
4. I see that You do speaking events. I have many contacts in my industry that are always looking for relevant speakers for conferences. Are you part of one of the speaking bureas? Someone you know has lost his or her job and is calling to ask if you know of anyone who’s hiring or if they can use you as a reference. With the current state of the economy and the massive layoffs that have resulted, that type of scenario has become all too commonplace. From that list, select your three closest friends and your one best friend. These 12 make up your inner circle. Beaudine writes that most people never get what they want for three reasons:
1. They don’t ask. No one can help if they don’t know what you want.
2. When they do ask, they ask the wrong people. For some reason, people are uncomfortable asking their “who” for help. As a result, they’ll ask almost anyone except their friends, who are the only ones with a motive to help.
3. When they do ask for help, they ask too vaguely. Even if I’m motivated to help a friend, I can’t do it when I don’t know what he or she wants.
In “The Power of WHO,” Beaudine also suggests the use of what he calls the “100-40 Strategy” In this case, you should make a longer list of your friends (100 maximum) and a list of 40 things you want to accomplish (or if you’re hunting for a job, 40 places you would love to work). As Beaudine notes, the exact numbers are less important than the concept of putting your goals in writing so that your wider circle of friends can help you attain them. With each of your 100 friends becoming your proponent in their own circle of friends, you will now have the potential to connect with up to 10,000 people who can help you achieve your dreams.Beaudine also points out the importance of reaching out and reconnecting with your “community of friends.” But he is quick to note that for “The Power of WHO” to work, you must offer assistance at least as often as you ask for it. The Power of Who
With unemployment being at its highest since 1992 and millions in fear of losing their jobs, I’ve reached out to Bob Beaudine, author of "THE POWER OF WHO" to be my guest blogger today.
His message – one that cannot be understated: People Hire People–Not Resumes.
In this Bullish On Books guest post, Bob offers advice on what to do and what not to do in this down market to find a job.
In a very challenging and uncertain marketplace, who do you think is more likely to help you find a job--a career website, someone who doesn’t know you, or someone who is a personal friend that knows your talent, energy, drive, and ambition first-hand? You already know the answer! With unemployment at almost 8%, and 11.6 million people desperately seeking work; faceless websites, business cards passed out to near strangers and mass emails sent out to Dear Sir, To Whom It May Concern, and Dear Recruiter are all considered spam! I know, because after 25-plus years as a top executive recruiter, I’ve been on the receiving end of way too much of it.
Let me give you some insight that I recently share in my book The Power of WHO as to what executive recruiters and prospective bosses are thinking about when they interview you. Knowing this is like getting the test answers before the test. It should change the way you market yourself.
Here are the 4 questions going through their mind as they meet you:
Do I know you?
Do I like you?
Do you understand my needs?
Are you the best for me and my particular situation?
Since all the candidates being considered will have great qualifications for the role- the first question is the key!
Do I know you? What they’re thinking is how do I know this person? Who recommended them? Why? Because references, endorsements, testimonials are your biggest allies to win the job. Over 80% of jobs placed are through a friend or a friend of a friend. So a strategy of finding one friend who is friends with the decision maker and would give you a positive reference before your meeting is gold!
You Already Have a Powerful Network
Is it possible that someone you already know, someone who likes you, can actually help you find your next job? Yes, Absolutely! One of the greatest mistakes in business today is that most people never reach out for help, never lean on their "Who" (friends) in times of need. These friends undergird you with a power you don’t have on your own. They’ll ask their “Who” to help you get where you want to go. They’ll open doors that you couldn’t open alone and get you connected. All you have to do to get started is to implement the 3 R’s- Remember, Reach Out and Re-Connect!
Remember- Your best asset in times of crisis is the relationships you already have. Can you name them? The reason so many people are confused about who their true friends are is simply because they’ve never declared it. So make a list of your 12 friends, 3 close and 1 best friend. These 12 are your “inner circle” of greatest influence. Next, make a list of your old friends you knew at school, church, teams, neighbors, clubs, charities etc. Finding new friends is always good, but keeping the ones you have is more important.
Reach Out- Call these friends! Tell them you miss them! These are people who would drop everything to help you. Don’t worry if it’s been 20 years since you talked--one of life’s pleasant little phenomena is that once someone holds a place in your heart, they never leave. Expect to hear: “Where have you been—I missed you!”
Re-Connect- Almost everyone would agree that we all need friends. But what good is having friends if you hardly ever talk to them? We need to start doing life once again with friends-investing time with them, reconnecting, nurturing and building these relationships because in the end—it’s all about “Who!” How many people do you really need to know this year to find that job you desperately need? Probably just one.

You’ll be amazed at the results, but more importantly, you’ll grow closer to the people who should matter the most – your friends.

I was recommended a book to read over the Christmas Holiday call “The Power Of Who” by Bob Beaudine. I was one of the first people to receive the book and have read it three times now. I think this is the best book I have ever read on networking. Very powerful ideas anyone can use and should use everyday. I would highly recommend it to anyone, not just in business, but in life. I have ordered 12 books to give to my closest friends and customers. I just handed out my last one, now I have to order another 12. I wanted to thank Bob personally for taking the time to write this book. I called his office and talked with Katy. She was gracious to give Bob my message because he was on a conference call. She said he would call at some point. Well a few days later, meaning today, my cell phone rang and it was Bob on the other end. I was so thrilled and shocked, I almost drove off of the road. Thank you Bob for taking time out of your busy day to give me a call. It was great talking to you, I really appreciate it. Keep up the great work. Thank you.
